We need urgent global talks on the EU’s carbon adjustment import charges
The idea was simple: To meet progressively higher carbon emission-reduction targets in line with its climate-action commitments under the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the EU needed to impose higher obligations on its own industrial activities in carbon-intensive sectors. As a result, it had to tackle two challenges.

OPS... they did it again!
Congress has been abolition of the National Pension System (NPS) and return to the old pension scheme (OPS) in the three states of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh, where it came to power. Its newer state government in Karnataka is considering the same step, but has yet to take it. Is better sense prevailing? The new Congress election manifesto makes no mention of OPS. Answering questions, P Chidambaram said OPS was very much on the party's mind, but it was waiting to react to the report of an official committee on the issue. Does that suggest second thoughts? In Jharkhand, the coalition government of which Congress is a part has gone back to OPS. Seeing the populist trend, even some BJP leaders in other states have said OPS needs reconsideration. Sorry, it doesn't.

FCA lays out 2024/25 fees and levies proposals with £755m planned spend
After freezing minimum and flat rate fees last financial year, the FCA has today (9 April) confirmed it plans to increase them in 2024/25, along with application fees, in line with the 8.8% increase in its ongoing regulatory activities (ORA) budget. «We recognise that firms continue to face inflationary pressures, but we must also consider the impact of inflation and our expanding workload on our costs,» it stated. «Deferring the uplift merely passes on our costs into future years, placing greater pressure on variable fee-payers.» The FCA added: «We believe increasing minimum and flat...

Spring housing market looms over the Bank of Canada’s rate decision. Here’s why
Bank of Canada readies for its interest rate decision on Wednesday, experts say.The spring housing market, which kicks off in March, is typically one of the busiest times of the year for home buyers and sellers in Canada. So far, the spring housing season is a “mixed picture,” according to RBC assistant chief economist Robert Hogue, as the Bank of Canada’s benchmark interest rate remains high and boxes out some prospective buyers.Preliminary data from local housing boards show some western markets, particularly in Alberta, saw a strong uptick in home sales in March. In Toronto, housing activity has declined for two consecutive months.Average home prices are meanwhile ticking up in some regions including the GTA after a correction in the market tied to the central bank’s rate tightening cycle over the past few years.“In some parts of the country, that recovery seems to be relatively robust,” Hogue tells Global News.

Europe is importing a solar boom. Good news for (nearly) everyone
A banner running down the side of the European Commission’s headquarters in Brussels depicts cartoon workers recladding its 13-floor façade with solar panels. The illustration might come across as a cruel joke to residents of the Belgian capital, for whose leaden skies the phrase “fifty shades of grey" could have been coined. But thanks to green edicts devised by the Euro-wallahs at the commission, the continent’s fields and rooftops are being paved with very real photovoltaic cells.

Joe Biden plans to cancel student loan debt, 23 million Americans may be impacted
Biden announced on Monday plans to ease student debt that would benefit at least 23 million Americans, addressing a key issue for young voters whose support he needs as he seeks re-election in November. The plans, which the Democratic president detailed in Madison, Wisconsin, include cancelling up to $20,000 of accrued and capitalized interest for borrowers, regardless of income, which Biden's administration estimates would eliminate the entirety of that interest for 23 million borrowers.
