Shortage of local solar modules remains a cause for concern
renewable energy capacity in the past few years, a shortage of solar modules continues to cast a cloud over the sectors’ growth prospects, said stakeholders at the Mint Sustainability Summit 2023. Speaking at a panel discussion on ‘The Future of Clean Energy in India: A 500GW Vision’, Mohit Bhargava, CEO, NTPC Green Energy noted that domestic solar module manufacturing capacity is now close to 20-25 GW, but the supply chain is still dependent on Chinese imports for products like cells and wafers. He added that given the concerns on continuing imports, the Centre has rolled out the second phase of the production linked incentive scheme for solar modules, which would support the entire value chain from cells to modules.

Lagarde’s policy silence keeps ECB interest rate debate raging
Christine Lagarde's avoidance of a clear signal of intent for European Central Bank policy has just thrown a brighter spotlight on a pivotal week in the euro zone. While the president observed on Friday that inflation remains undefeated, she didn't address prospects for the September 14 meeting, giving colleagues scope to publicly debate the need for increasing borrowing costs just as crucial data arrive in coming days. Consumer-price numbers will set the scene for one of the most suspenseful decisions since ECB rate hikes began more than a year ago, as officials ask if additional monetary tightening is an imperative, or whether a souring economic outlook is bleak enough to warrant a pause. Those who attended the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole conference alongside Lagarde will have heard for themselves Chair Jerome Powell's own signal that US borrowing costs will stay high and could even rise further. “Our view remains that a rate hike in September remains on a knife-edge but ultimately the ECB, with an eye on core inflation, will raise,” David Powell and Maeva Cousin of Bloomberg Economics wrote after the president's speech. By contrast, in another illustration of the close-run nature of the decision, economists at Berenberg led by Holger Schmieding changed their forecast on Friday before Lagarde spoke to put a 60% probability on a rate pause, up from 40%.

India seeks easier visa, faster mobility of its skilled professionals to Australia
India has sought relaxation in certain visa requirements, reduction in the number of documents and fast tracking of the application processing time to allow easier and quicker mobility of its skilled professionals to Australia. The move is aimed at allowing direct entry of Indian workers into Australia instead of the current practice under which skilled workers are often routed through GCC nations or the UK, Ireland or New Zealand before they land up in Australia. Skills development minister Dharmendra Pradhan raised these issues in his meeting with the Australian healthcare and aged care minister Mark Butler recently as the two countries prepare to hold the seventh round of Australia-India Education and Skills Council meeting next month, people familiar with the deliberations told ET. Since India and Australia have already signed the mutual recognition of qualifications for education and skills, certain visa application requirements could also be looked into for more relaxation, India conveyed to Australia, citing the mandatory requirement to obtain a positive skills assessment from the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council or the Australian Community Workers Association if the candidate obtains the qualifications overseas. According to a senior official, India has also flagged the issue of cost of examination, saying it is very high and can affect the mobility of qualified workers at the round table with the Australian minister.

Loan waiver promises may hamper micro loan repayment, but only temporarily

However, the impact of such announcements, if any, may just be short-lived as bottom-of-the-pyramid borrowers have over the years leant the importance of maintaining a healthy credit score. Captains of the microfinance industry said that their borrowers have now become savvy and know that a good repayment ensures timely dose of loans when they require it the most. So, debt waiver announcements could only derail repayment just temporarily and would not translate into default and significant escalation in credit cost. «Unless specific debt waiver announcements are made for microfinance like in Assam, the impact could be temporary.
