Retail inflation roars to 7.44% as food costs bite
NEW DELHI : Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation shot past estimates to hit a 15-month high of 7.44% in July as food and vegetable prices surged, breaching the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) inflation target range for the first time since February. A Mint poll of 19 economists had estimated a six-month high retail inflation of 6.50% in July, sharply up from June’s 4.81%, on account of a surge in vegetable prices.

NEW DELHI : ITC Ltd on Monday outperformed Street expectations with a 17.5% rise in standalone net profit for June quarter, helped by lower exp-enses. However, an ongoing ban on wheat export and a more recent ban on rice export hurt standalone revenue for the quarter that fell 7.2% to ₹16,995.49 crore from ₹18,320.16 crore a year ago. The company, known for its Gold Flake cigarettes and Bingo chips, posted net profit of ₹4,902.74 crore for the quarter ended 30 June, up from ₹4,169.38 crore a year ago.

NEW DELHI : Budget carrier SpiceJet on Monday reported a net profit of ₹205 crore in the June quarter, buoyed by continued strong demand for air travel. The Gurugram-based airline had reported a net loss of ₹789 crore a year earlier. Total income fell 8.4% to ₹2,267 crore in the quarter while total expenses decreased by 36% to ₹2,069 crore.

India makes first crude oil payment to UAE in Indian rupees
India and the United Arab Emirates have started settling bilateral trade in their local currencies with India's top refiner making payment in rupees for purchase of a million barrels of oil from the Middle Eastern nation, the Indian government said on Monday.Indian Oil Corp made payment to Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), according to a statement issued by Indian embassy in UAE. The transaction comes after one involving the sale of 25 kg gold from a UAE gold exporter to a buyer in India at about 128.4 million rupees ($1.54 million).

PC Jeweller reported a quarterly loss for a third straight quarter on Monday, hurt by a plunge in sales as the company remains embroiled in a legal tangle with multiple banks. The company reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 172 crore ($20.68 million) in the first quarter ended June 30 from a profit of Rs 7443 lakh a year ago. A slew of lenders, including State Bank of India, Indian Bank, IDFC First Bank and Union Bank, have deemed PC Jeweller's borrowing accounts as non-performing and have moved to court seeking loan recalls.

Emkay Global Financial Services has reiterated a ‘buy’ on Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) after the stock scored a 52-week high at ₹180.25 during Monday's session, after the state-run refiner on August 11 reported a surge of 102 per cent in consolidated net profit at ₹17,383 crore in the April-June quarter of fiscal 2023-24 (Q1FY24). ONGC shares opened two per cent higher at ₹180 during today's session, compared to its previous close of ₹177.15 on Friday.
