The Ukraine war changed this company forever
This 50-acre plot in Oradea, Romania, close to the border with Hungary, beat out scores of other sites in Europe to become the home of Nokian Tyres’ new 650 million-euro ($706 million) factory. Like an industrial-minded Goldilocks, the Finnish tire company had searched for the just-right combination of real estate, transport links, labor supply and pro-business environment. Yet the make-or-break feature that every host country had to have would not have even appeared on the radar a few years ago: membership in both the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Rice to get costlier as weather, India's farm perks threaten supply
rice prices, now at their highest in 11 years, are set to rally further after India moved to boost payments to farmers, just as El Nino threatens yields in key producers and alternative staples get costlier for poor Asians and Africans. India accounts for more than 40% of world rice exports, which were 56 million tonnes in 2022, but low inventories mean any cut in shipments will fuel food prices driven up by Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year and erratic weather. «India was the cheapest supplier of rice,» B.V.

Q1 IT preview: Weak macros signal dull quarter for IT, firms may narrow guidance
Infosys and HCLTech may also trim the upper end of their revenue guidance range for the ongoing fiscal 2024, and the recovery predicted by the IT companies for the second half of the fiscal year is likely to be subdued, they said. The average of five analyst estimates collected by ET suggests Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, HCLTech and Wipro to report a 0.35% increase quarter-on-quarter revenue for the quarter ended June 30, excluding changes in currency rates. The three months ending June 30 is usually considered a strong quarter for the sector.

‘It Can Be a Bit Polarizing’—Finance Chiefs Weigh Return-to-Office
The return-to-office discussion has upended the workplace. Sparsely populated workplaces are affecting corporate cultures and workers’ ambitions, bosses say, leading some to step up their return-to-office mandates. Rank-and-file workers, meanwhile, are reluctant to give up the flexibility gained during the pandemic, with long commutes, caregiving duties and high costs among the motivators keeping them at home, at least some of the time, they say.

Companies Look to Pay Tech Vendors Based on Business Outcomes, Not Usage
A growing number of technology providers are pricing their products and services based on a promised outcome rather than charging customers set subscription fees or on a per-user basis. While still far from the norm, the uptick in such pricing models has put pressure on those vendors to offer more flexible pricing options to attract and retain increasingly budget-conscious customers, analysts say.

Some Fed Officials Supported Raising Rates in June
Some Federal Reserve policy makers would have supported raising interest rates last month even though officials decided to leave them unchanged, and many were prepared to raise them again this year. Minutes of officials’ June meeting, released Wednesday, offered little that would alter recent market expectations of another increase at their July 25-26 meeting to combat inflation.

A Retired Opera Performer’s Next Big Act: Designing Houses
When they first met, they had vastly different roles: One was a Nubian slave, one an Egyptian priestess and one a nobleman soldier. Now, more than three decades after that encounter on the set of “Aida" at New York’s Metropolitan Opera in 1991, the slave and the priestess (singer Rob Maher and dancer Deborah Allton-Maher) are married and the soldier (actor and architect Phil Consalvo) has just designed them a new house on Indian Lake in the Adirondacks in New York state. All three say it was their background collaborating as artists that enabled them to work through contrasting visions, producing a home that is part Japanese tea house, part homey cabin—original in its design yet in tune with properties around it.

Services activity hits 3-month low in June
PMI Business Activity Index to 58.5 in June, compared with 61.2 in May. This is the second month of decline after services PMI had scaled a 13-year high of 62 in April. A value of over 50 denotes expansion. Despite the easing, growth prospects strengthened as firms expected demand conditions to improve. “Demand for Indian services continued to surge higher in June, with all four monitored subsectors registering quicker increases in new business inflows,” said Pollyanna De Lima, economics associate director at S&P Global Market Intelligence. The 400 service firms highlighted healthy demand and marketing initiatives as major contributors for the uptick in new business. The better outlook bodes well for the economy, as manufacturing is expected to ease owing to the global slowdown.
