India’s inclusion in JPMorgan’s bond index needs sober analysis
₹26.4 trillion or around 9.7% of gross domestic product. A Bloomberg report suggests this is the highest among the 20 countries in JPMorgan’s bond index. Over the years, governments in India have funded themselves through financial repression, with a significant portion of every new deposit coming into the banking system being funnelled into buying government bonds.

Hyundai Motor India to offer six airbags as standard across portfolio as demand for safer cars grows
₹8,000-9,000," said Tarun Garg, chief operating officer (COO), Hyundai Motors India, told Mint. Hyundai's strategy to grab an edge back from the competition involves a three-pronged strategy: make advanced safety features such as ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) available as an optional feature in more of its current line-up of products (from 38% at present to 60% by 2024 and eventually 100% of its model range), make active safety features such as ESC (Electronic Stability Control) with VSM (Vehicle Stability Management) available in one or more trims across all models, and make basic passive safety equipment like six airbags for passenger and driver, three-point seatbelt and seat belt reminders standard across all models. "We enhanced our ADAS offering from a single model (Tuscon) to five models, including the Exter, in just one year, The response has been very good.

Lessons from Airbnb: Businesses aren't just built on good ideas, big markets
Airbnb CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky has dubbed the company a ‘fundamentally broken business’, which is certainly unusual. CEOs normally sound upbeat and Chesky, on the face of it, has reasons to be optimistic. The company has global brand recognition and is the pioneer in a business with strong traction.

Los Angeles Attacks Charter Schools
Enrollment is declining in union-run public schools across the country, and Los Angeles lost about 7.6% of its K-12 students from 2020-21 to 2022-23. Yet the teachers union and its allies in the city are mounting an effort to restrict charter schools from using empty space in district schools. California law requires school districts to make space available to charter students through “co-location." This lets charters reach agreements to use classrooms and other space in district school buildings.

Should Biden Stop Trying to Present Himself as Successful?
On Friday this column noted concern among Democrats that Joe Biden insists on talking about “Bidenomics" even as Americans remain upset about his degradation of our money. Now one of the president’s allies has expanded his friendly critique into a full-blown 2024 Democratic campaign strategy: Instead of talking about the president, attack people who aren’t the president. “Biden should stop focusing on the economy" reads an MSNBC headline over a story from former Jill Biden press secretary Michael LaRosa.

Bhutan plans on reducing 'expensive' airfares to boost tourism
tourism sector, Bhutan has planned to reduce the 'expensive' airfares to lower the price for visitors travelling to the country, Bhutan Live reported. According to country's Finance Minister, this step would result in uptick of travellers to the country and increase the number of visitors that visit the nation, as the «expensive» airfare frequently discourages travellers from travelling to Bhutan. Moreover, the government has put in place a number of incentives, such as lowering the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) from USD200 to USD100 per person, each night. Other plans, include permitting low-cost hotels to accommodate tourists and creating other long-stay incentive programmes. The government is currently taking action to encourage travellers by considering price reductions. “The government is planning with Drukair Corporation and Bhutan Airlines to reduce the airfare for the tourists.

UK migration advisor tells Sunak government to scrap special visa rules for shortage occupations
The MAC conducted a review of the Shortage Occupation List (SOL) and expressed concerns that making it easier to recruit low-wage workers could increase the risk of exploitation. Currently, employers can hire migrant workers at 80% of the standard «going rate» for specific occupations listed on the SOL. This includes roles like bricklayers and care workers. Being on the SOL allows employers to bypass the general minimum salary threshold for a skilled worker visa, which is £26,200. Consequently, sectors with wages below this threshold have particularly benefited from inclusion on the list. The MAC's recommendation stems from concerns that low-wage migrants may result in a net fiscal cost for the UK, and the administrative burden of the scheme can be uneconomical for many businesses. The committee believes that abolishing the SOL would be a preferable approach to addressing labor shortages in low-wage sectors. The MAC suggested that no employer should be allowed to pay below the going rate, as this would help protect resident workers from wage undercutting and reduce the potential exploitation of migrant workers. The Home Office has not provided an immediate response to the report.
