Oil hovers near 3-month highs as tighter supplies, China stimulus pledge lifts sentiment; Brent at $82/bbl
₹6,445 per bbl, having swung between ₹6,416 and ₹6,475 per bbl during the session so far, against a previous close of ₹6,461 per barrel. The crude benchmarks have already chalked up four weekly gains in a row, with supplies expected to tighten due to output cuts from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and allies. Earlier-loading Brent contracts are selling above later loadings, a price structure known as backwardation indicating traders see tight supply, with the six-month spread near a two-and-a-half month high.

Threats to China’s food security & its global implications
China as the most populous country of the world, the problem of feeding a robust 1.40 billion people in China is increasingly becoming problematic due to increasing demand, shrinking arable land, declining soil fertility, increasing fertilizer intensity amid climatic change and sustainability threats. Recently addressing a meeting of the Central Commission for Financial& Economic Affairs (CCFEA), Chinese President XI Jinping highlighted food security as “a major issue for the country.” As climatic change is becoming a reality that could not be ignored and temperature regimes and rain cycles are changing in intensity and frequency, the problem assumes further complexity.

Govt says closely monitoring prices, demand-supply situation of food items
government is closely monitoring the prices as well as the demand-supply situation of all essential food items, Union Minister of State for Agriculture Kailash Choudhary on Tuesday said while asserting that it is committed to balancing the interest of both consumers and farmers. The government has formed a panel to regularly monitor the prices and availability situation, he added. «The government is monitoring the prices and availability of food items. It takes measures to boost domestic availability and keep prices under check,» Choudhary said as he was replying to a question about food inflation and the recent export ban on non-basmati white rice. He was speaking at an event to launch ITC's postal stamp on millets in collaboration with India Post. Based on the demand-supply situation and retail price, he said the government decides on imposing export duty or putting restrictions on exports. The minister said there is no problem on the supply front of food items in the country.
