For Gates Foundation, it's to help India but also learn from India: Bill Gates
Alongside the launch of the Gates Foundation Goalkeepers Report 2024, Microsoft cofounder and philanthropist Bill Gates tells ET that he hopes India will be able to graduate from the public distribution system and rely instead on raised incomes over the next decades. Edited excerpts: The latest Goalkeepers Report focuses strongly on malnutrition. What is your view on India’s policy interventions such as free cereals given through the public distribution system? There is no doubt that the poorer you are, the higher is food as a percentage of your budget. And so, the idea that governments, either by incentivising the private sector or through various subsidisation, keep food costs fairly low- particularly for the urban poor, and yet they have to be careful not to hurt the farmers. The balancing act, India does manage largely. In the US, we have graduated from needing to have this type of food distribution. We have a thing called ‘food stamps’, where you get money, and you can only use it to buy food. At some point — it could be more than a decade — hopefully, you can graduate from having to have a public distribution system and just rely on the fact that you have raised incomes and educated consumers.

Red Sea crisis, logistical challenges impacting India's exports: Experts
Red sea crisis and logistical challenges have severely impacted the country's exports in August, which contracted 9.3 per cent, according to exporters and experts. Think tank GTRI said the contraction of petroleum product exports' by 37.56 per cent to USD 5.95 billion in August is linked to the ongoing disruptions in the Red Sea. These exports were USD 9.54 billion in August 2023. «This dramatic decline has significantly impacted India's overall merchandise trade, leading to a 9.33 per cent reduction in August 2024 compared to the previous year,» Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) Founder Ajay Srivastava said.

Worst drought in four decades: Zimbabwe to cull 200 elephants to feed its people
Zimbabwe, facing the worst drought in four decades, is set to cull 200 elephants to help feed its people, according to wildlife authorities. This decision follows a similar plan by neighbouring Namibia, which announced earlier this month that it would cull 160 wildlife animals, including 83 elephants, due to the severe drought affecting its population. The El Niño-induced drought has devastated southern Africa, leading both Zimbabwe and Namibia to declare states of emergency. The drought has directly impacted 68 million people in the region, resulting in severe food shortages and dire conditions. Tinashe Farawo, spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (Zimparks), told Reuters, “We can confirm that we are planning to cull about 200 elephants across the country. We are working on the details of how this will be carried out.” Farawo also confirmed that the elephant meat will be distributed to communities in Zimbabwe affected by the drought.

Arvind Kejriwal: Activist and politician with many a surprise up his sleeve
Arvind Kejriwal is a politician who probably likes to catch people unawares. Beset by charges of corruption, the AAP supremo resigned as Delhi chief minister on Tuesday and sought a referendum on his «politics of honesty», the second time he has done so in his 11-year political career. Two days after he was released from Tihar Jail in the excise policy graft case, Kejriwal took everyone by complete surprise when he announced on Sunday he would resign as chief minister and return only if people give him a «certificate of honesty» in the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls. Ever the politician with an eye on theatrical effect, he also sought early polls in the city. Clever politics or foolish overreach. The jury will be out on whether Kejrwial played his cards wisely or miscalculated the risk till elections, due in February, are held.

Will probe root cause of rail accidents, conspiracy will not last long: Amit Shah
Amit Shah on Tuesday said any conspiracy to cause railway accidents will not last long and the government will soon unveil an initiative for the protection of the 1.10 lakh km railway network across the country. The home minister's remarks came in the wake of a series of railway accidents, most of which appeared to be attempts at sabotage as obstructions were placed on the railway tracks. Addressing a press conference to mark 100 days of the third tenure of the BJP-led NDA government, Shah said he had discussed the issue of railway safety with Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw over the last two days. «As far as accidents are concerned, we will investigate the root cause of this. Whatever the reason, the government is committed to addressing the issue. If this is a conspiracy, it will not last long. If there are gaps, they will be plugged,» Shah said with Vaishnaw by his side.
