Varun Gandhi addresses his first poll rally in UP's Sultanpur, mother Maneka's battlefield
BJP leader Varun Gandhi on Thursday addressed his first rally in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls in support of Maneka Gandhi, and said his mother has a close connection with the people of her Sultanpur constituency. «Elections are going on everywhere in the country...but there is only one region in the country where people don't call their MP, Sansad ji, Mantri ji, or by her name, but call her mata ji,» the Pilibhit MP said here amid applause from the public. «I am confident that this time you people are going to break all the records. I have no enmity with anyone. When I came to Sultanpur for the first time, I felt the 'Khusbhu' (fragrance) of my father here, but today I feel proud to say that I have come to my motherland,» he said. This is the first time Varun Gandhi has addressed a rally this election season. He has remained out of the public space ever since he was replaced by the BJP with Jitin Prasada from Pilibhit, which went to polls in the first phase of the elections.

Russian missiles kill 6 in Ukraine's second-largest city where Moscow's troops are pressing
missiles slammed into Ukraine's second-largest city in the northeast of the country and killed at least six civilians early Thursday, officials said, as Kyiv's army labored to hold off an intense cross-border offensive by the Kremlin's larger and better-equipped forces. At least 16 people were injured as S-300 missiles struck the city of Kharkiv, regional Gov Oleh Syniehubov said. The sound of 15 explosions reverberated around the city of some 1 million people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the attack «extremely cruel.» He expressed renewed frustration at not getting enough air defense systems from the country's Western partners to prevent the barrages after more than two years of unrelenting war. The city of Kharkiv, which is the capital of the region of the same name, lies about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the Russian border. Moscow's troops have in recent weeks captured villages in the area as part of a broad push, and analysts say they may be trying to get within artillery range of the city.

Unjustly targeted, BJP's show-cause notice demoralizing: Jayant Sinha
BJP MP Jayant Sinha, who was asked by the party to show cause for not taking part in campaigning, on Thursday said he was being «unjustly targeted» and the public notice amounted to demoralising dedicated workers like him. Replying to the show cause notice, Sinha said it was issued to him though he had on March 2 communicated to BJP president JP Nadda that he would not be able to shoulder electoral responsibilities as he would focus on combating issues arising from global climate change. The Hazaribagh MP also said that it was wrong for the party to allege that he did not cast his vote on May 20, since he had exercised his franchise through postal ballot and was not in the country on the polling day. «Given my contributions to the party and the circumstances, the public issuance of your letter is unseemly. Your approach demoralizes dedicated party workers and undermines the party's collective efforts. Additionally, despite my loyalty and hard work for the party, it appears that I am being unjustly targeted,» the former Union minister replied on the show cause notice via a post on X.

Merger talks between NSE, BSE offshore arms called off
MUMBAI:In a significant setback to Gift City's ambitions of becoming a global financial hub, the much-anticipated merger between the two international exchanges located there, NSE IX and India INX, has been called off, according to two persons aware of the development.India INX is a subsidiary of BSE Ltd, while NSE IX is led by the National Stock Exchange Ltd.The merger was expected to enhance trading volumes and attract international investors to Gujarat's Gift City, where the average daily turnover on international exchanges runs into billions of dollars. The talks were called off by the BSE because discussions, on since 2022, had failed to make any headway, said one of the persons cited above.A BSE spokesperson confirmed that the merger talks are "off the table" but declined to comment on the reasons for the decision. Attempts to reach a spokesperson of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) were unsuccessful."The merger was driven by the IFSCA's objective of making Gift City a global financial centre rivalling the likes of Singapore, Hong Kong, Luxembourg, and Dubai.

Singapore and Kazakhstan plan Eurasia to ASEAN trade & transit corridor
Singapore and Central Asia’s biggest state Kazakhstan are the leading transit hubs in their regions. This is one of the reasons why the two countries are establishing close economic ties that can stimulate growth and find new business opportunities. This will also boost India’s role as a link country between SE Asia and Eurasia as well as the Chabahar Port where India has gained management rights for 10 years. Kazakhstan is developing a Trans-Caspian international transport route that will connect the vast markets of Asia and the EU. Kazakhstan's cooperation with Singapore, a major international transport and logistics center, can help both countries improve the efficiency of transport links in Asia. Singapore has arrangements with Eurasian Economic Union to boost economic presence in Eurasia. In a world with a new geopolitical alignment, security and consistency of supply chains have become more important than ever. In this regard, Kazakhstan has enormous potential for the supply of rare earth metals, the demand for which is growing every day due to the development of green energy. These metals are also widely used in high-tech devices and electronics, in the manufacture of batteries and magnets, according to experts.

Believe it or not: Even in Saudi Arabia, renewable power is cheaper than fossil fuels
Saudi Arabia signed deals to buy electricity from two large-scale wind farms that are cheaper than natural gas plants, as it aims to rapidly transition to a bigger share of renewables in the power grid. The state-run Saudi Power Procurement Co. this week said it had agreed to purchase power at record-low prices from the wind projects to be developed in the kingdom by Japan’s Marubeni Corp. A combination of state backing and strong wind conditions in the country will help make the green power plants cheaper than fossil fuel alternatives, the head of the Saudi company said. “What’s unique about these projects is they’ve achieved extremely low cost of electricity that is considered the lowest we’ve seen globally,” Mazin Albahkali, chief executive officer of SPPC, said in an interview. “Achieving extremely low tariffs on renewables is definitely helping reduce the cost of power generation in Saudi Arabia.”
