Russia opens new case against jailed politician Alexei Navalny
Russia has brought fresh charges against Alexei Navalny, the country's top opposition politician already serving a 19-year sentence, he said Friday, as Moscow intensifies its crackdown on dissent amid the Ukraine offensive. Navalny galvanised huge nationwide protests in Russia before he was jailed in 2021 on fraud charges after returning from Germany, where he was recovering from a poison attack that he and independent investigators say was carried out by the Russian state. In August his initial sentence of nine years was more than doubled to 19 years for «extremism», and a court also ruled to send him to a harsher «special regime» facility. Authorities have now accused him of vandalism, which could add up to another three years to his sentence, Navalny said, citing a letter he had received from Russia's Investigative Committee in prison. Since launching its military offensive on Ukraine last February, the Kremlin has escalated its crackdown against Navalny, who opposes Russia's offensive, his allies and the Russian opposition more broadly. «They really initiate a new criminal case against me every 3 months,» Navalny said on social media. «Never has an inmate, sitting in solitary confinement for more than a year, had such a rich social and political life,» he quipped, in his typically sarcastic tone.

PSUs' petrol sales up 7.5%, diesel down 7.5% in November
State-run companies’ petrol sales rose 7.5% year-on-year in November while diesel sales fell by an equal percentage point. State companies sold 6% more jet fuel year-on-year in November and 1% less cooking gas, according to the provisional sales data provided by these companies. The oil ministry publishes consolidated sales data for the industry, including for the private retailers, by the tenth of every month, which gives a more accurate picture of the fuel demand in the country. State-run companies control around 90% of petrol pumps in the country but have been losing share in the countrywide sales of diesel and petrol this year after gaining market share last year.

The war in Ukraine is a powerful reason to enlarge—and improve—the EU
Ukraine, something akin to the sentiment that moved the EU’s founding fathers is stirring again. The talk now is of admitting as many as nine new members, including Ukraine. Joining the world’s most successful club of peaceful, prosperous democracies would set that war-ravaged country—and fellow aspirant members in the Western Balkans, Georgia and Moldova—on a new and promising path.
