Do you have to pay tax on pooja items like Gangajal, Agarbattis? Find out
Amid the growing criticism by the Congress on the GST imposed on ‘Gangajal’, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs on Thursday issued a clarification saying that this important part of ‘pooja samagri’ is exempted from any kind of taxation. Earlier in the day, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge took to X (formerly Twitter) over GST on Gangajal. In his post, Kharge claimed that the Narendra Modi government has imposed 18 per cent GST on Gangajal. In his post in Hindi, he said that the decision to impose GST on Gangajal was sheer ‘loot’ by the Modi government. Hours later, the CBIC issued a statement and said that there was no GST on Gangajal.

Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurates Nagaland's first medical college
Mansukh Mandaviya on Saturday inaugurated Nagaland's first medical college — the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (NIMSR). Mandaviya unveiled the monolith marking the inauguration, in the presence of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Deputy CM TR Zeliang, state ministers, MLAs and bureaucrats. The college has 100 seats — 85 for students of Nagaland and 15 for other states. Addressing the function, Mandaviya said that the first medical college of the state will not only impart medical education but it will also be a research centre. The central government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to set up healthcare facilities in every part of the country, he said. Medical and nursing education needs to be strengthened considering the need of the hour, he added. There were about 64,000 MBBS seats in the country in 2014, and it has increased manifold, Mandaviya said. «Similarly PG seats have also doubled in the last nine years,» he said. He asked the Nagaland government to start Jan Aushadi Kendras in every health facility of the state, and assured full support of the Centre. CM Rio said it was a historic day for the people of Nagaland as their dream of a medical college was fulfilled. The state has a severe shortage of doctors, and there are shortcomings in the delivery of secondary and tertiary levels of healthcare, he said. He said that he hoped the new facility would grow into a centre of excellence. Rio urged the people to ensure special care and love for the students coming from other states to study at NIMSR, so that they become the ambassadors of the state.

IMF has reached goal to add $3 billion to trust fund for poorest countries
International Monetary Fund has met its fundraising target to increase concessional trust fund resources for the world's poorest countries by $3 billion, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said on Saturday. Georgieva said in a statement that the contributions completed during IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Morocco «will allow the IMF to continue to support low-income countries with zero-interest rate financing to meet their evolving needs.» She said that PRGT lending has increased five-fold to $30 billion since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, with about 30 countries still with loan programs. Demand for the trust's resources is expected to reach $40 billion through 2024, about five times the historical average. The IMF had urged member countries to fill a $1.2 billion gap in the $3 billion subsidy account endorsed by the membership in 2021.

MP CM frustrated sensing defeat of BJP in assembly polls: Congress
Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan after he targeted party leaders Kamal Nath and AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over poll promises. Speaking to reporters, Congress spokesman Charan Singh Sapra termed the ruling BJP in Madhya Pradesh a «sinking ship». He said the Congress would win more than 145 seats out of 230 in the November 17 assembly elections in the central state. «Even PM Modi cannot salvage the sinking ship of the BJP in the state,» Sapra said. He alleged Chouhan has become frustrated sensing the imminent defeat of the BJP and is issuing «foolish» statements forgetting the «political standards». «Chouhan has spoken against the Gandhis forgetting that the family has made sacrifices and is ready for it for the country's sake,» the AICC spokesman said.

Early results in New Zealand election indicate Christopher Luxon poised to become prime minister
National Party led by Christopher Luxon held a strong lead in New Zealand's general election on Saturday, with 20% of the vote counted. The National Party, which is currently in opposition, had 41.4% of the votes to 26% for the current governing party Labour, according to the Electoral Commission. The conservative National Party's preferred coalition partner, the ACT party, had 9.2%. New Zealand's Electoral Commission said that National and ACT would have 63 of the usual 120 seats in parliament, sufficient for them to form a government without the help of a third minor party. However, the number of seats in New Zealand's parliament can go above 120 if a party wins more electorate seats than is proportional to its share of the party vote.
