AGR curative plea dismissal: Sans relief VIL may face financial crisis in coming yrs, experts say
AGR front is «crucial» for Vodafone Idea and in its absence, the telco could be staring at financial crisis in coming years once the annual spectrum and AGR payments of USD 4-5 billion per annum fall due, CLSA said on Thursday. The brokerage's views come at a time when the Supreme Court has dismissed a batch of pleas filed by companies, including Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel, seeking correction of alleged computational errors in the Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR). «AGR relief is crucial for VIdea (VIL) and we await industry's next steps. In absence of AGR relief, VIdea could face financial crisis in 2HFY26/FY27CL, when annual spectrum and AGR payments to government of USD 4-5 billion per annum become due,» CLSA said in a note on Thursday. Macquarie's report titled «No AGR waivers; VI needs waivers and a white knight?» observed that Vodafone-Idea's net debt was USD 28 billion in 1QFY25, including AGR liability of USD 8.5 billion (of which about 20 per cent is principal and the rest represents interest and penalties).

Karnataka HC reserves verdict on Prajwal Revanna''s bail plea in sexual assault case
Karnataka High Court on Thursday reserved its verdict on the bail plea of former Janata Dal (S) MP Prajwal Revanna, who faces allegations of sexual assault and rape. A single-judge bench of Justice M Nagaprasanna earlier heard arguments on Revanna's application in the first case and two anticipatory bail pleas related to subsequent complaints. During the hearing, the court directed the advocates to avoid mentioning the victims' names and, instead, point out specific details in the case documents. Senior Advocate Prabhuling K Navadgi, appearing for Revanna, outlined the timeline of events, emphasising that the woman, who had previously complained about being illegally removed from her home, had not initially leveled allegations of sexual misconduct against Revanna.

Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Every year, countless Indians find themselves entangled in the complexities of third-party motor insurance claims. Unfortunately, the current system relies heavily on the judicial process for settlement and cases often drag on for at least four years on average before they are resolved in a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT).

Giving anticipatory bail in NDPS Act case 'very serious' issue, unheard of: SC
anticipatory bail in a case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act is a «very serious» issue and «unheard of», the Supreme Court said on Thursday. A bench headed by Justice B R Gavai and also comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and K V Viswanathan was hearing a plea filed by an accused seeking regular bail in a case lodged for alleged offences under provisions of the NDPS Act in West Bengal. The bench directed the West Bengal government to consider whether the state proposes to file an application seeking cancellation of anticipatory bail granted to four accused in a case. It issued notice to the state of West Bengal on the accused's bail plea and posted it for hearing after four weeks.

Big blow to Trump: In this swing state, RFK Jr.'s name will stay on the ballot
Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s name will remain on the presidential ballot in Wisconsin after a judge denied his request to have it removed, potentially hurting Donald Trump's re-election chances. RFK Jr. abandoned his own independent presidential campaign late last month to support the former president, who has offered him a cabinet position if he returns to office. The former Democrat has since scrambled to remove his name from ballots across swing states, stating that if his name remains, he would likely hand the election over to the Democrats after abandoning his presidential campaign. The removal of RFK Jr. from ballots in swing states could help Republicans secure key votes in the tight race for the White House between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Qualcomm loses court appeal against European Union antitrust penalty in chipset case from 2019
Qualcomm lost its bid on Wednesday to get a European Union antitrust penalty thrown out after a top court largely rebuffed the technology company's arguments in the case involving cellphone chipsets. The European Union's General Court said it was rejecting most of Qualcomm's appeal against the 242 million euro ($269 million) fine that the bloc's regulators issued in 2019, accusing the company of "predatory pricing" to drive a competitor out of the market. The European Commission, the 27-nation bloc's executive branch and top antitrust enforcer, said five years ago that Qualcomm abused its market dominance in 3G baseband chipsets, selling them below the cost of production to force startup Icera out of the market a decade prior.

If use of loudspeakers harmful during Ganesh festival then same for Eid too: HC
Bombay High Court said on Wednesday that if the use of loudspeakers and sound systems beyond permissible noise levels was harmful during the Ganesh festival then it also has the same effect during the Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi processions. A division bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar made the remark while hearing a bunch of public interest litigations (PILs) seeking a ban on the use of «DJs», «dance» and «laser lights» during the Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi processions. The petitions urged HC to direct the civic bodies and police to refrain from granting permission for the use of such high-decibel sound systems. The PILs claimed that neither the Quran nor the Hadith (holy books) prescribes the use of DJ systems and laser lights for the celebration.
