Needed: A societal awakening to take on climate change
A Supreme Court ruling connected with the survival of the endangered Great Indian Bustard species on 6 April 2024 stated: “ … the people have a right against the adverse effects of climate change … this right and the right to a clean environment are two sides of the same coin.... The inability of underserved communities to adapt to climate change or cope with its effects violates the right to life as well as the right to equality… If climate change and environmental degradation lead to acute food and water shortages in a particular area, poorer communities will suffer more than richer ones." This game-changing jurisprudence, recognizing protection against the adverse impacts of climate change as worthy of being considered a fundamental human right, came days before a similar ruling by Europe’s top human rights court that the Swiss government had violated the human rights of its citizens by failing to do enough to combat climate change.

Broadcasters may move court against Trai ruling on pay channels
TV broadcasters are planning to mount a legal challenge to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (Trai) directive on making pay channels that are available on DD Free Dish free to other distributors, sources privy to the development said. The broadcasters are likely to move court against the Trai notification through industry bodies like Indian Broadcasting and Digital Foundation and News Broadcasters and Digital Association, they added. Trai had on Monday directed that a TV channel permitted by the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB), which is available for free on DD Free Dish platform, cannot be declared a pay channel for addressable distribution platforms.

BNSS launches community service initiative for petty theft and nuisance offenses
Indian Penal Code (IPC), marking a significant shift in how India addresses certain crimes. One notable addition is the inclusion of community service as a punitive measure for several offenses, signaling a move towards more rehabilitative practices in law enforcement. Community Service as Alternative Punishment Under BNSS, community service is now an option for minor offenses such as petty thefts, public nuisance, and false defamation complaints. Offenders involved in thefts of property valued under Rs 5,000 can avoid traditional punishments by returning the stolen goods and performing community service.

SC stays HC order for taking back 108 hectares of grazing land from Adani Ports
Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the Gujarat High Court’s order passed last week that asked state authorities to take back 108 hectares of grazing land from Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Ltd in the Kachchh region and return it to villagers for cattle grazing. A bench comprising justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan while issuing notice to the Ministry of Environment & Forest, the state government, Development Commissioner, Mundra Port and SEZ, and others noted that senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi’s argument that “though the counsel for the petitioner (Adani) was present before the HC and attempted to make submissions, he was not heard by the HC… we shall stay the impugned order.” Rohatgi, appearing for Adani, argued that HC’s order was in «blatant breach of natural justice» as the company was not heard.

What to know about the Supreme Court immunity ruling in Trump's 2020 election interference case
Supreme Court's ruling Monday in former President Donald Trump's 2020 election interference case makes it all but certain that the Republican will not face trial in Washington ahead of the November election. The Supreme Court did not dismiss — as Trump had wanted — the indictment alleging he illegally schemed to cling to power after he lost to President Joe Biden. But the ruling still amounts to a major victory for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, whose legal strategy has focused on delaying the proceedings until after the election. The timing of the trial matters because if Trump defeats Biden, he could appoint an attorney general who would seek the dismissal of this case and the other federal prosecutions he faces. Or Trump could potentially order a pardon for himself.
