Why the Southern Baptists said no to IVF
The Southern Baptist Convention—whose nearly 13 million members make it the largest Protestant denomination in the U.S.—is often described as a “barometer" for evangelical sentiments nationwide. Yet last week the convention did something few Christian bodies have done: It adopted a resolution opposing the use of in vitro fertilization. Public debates about IVF and advanced reproductive technology aren’t new.

Arvind Kejriwal gets bail; 'Satyamev Jayate', says AAP's Atishi
Delhi Court on Thursday granted bail to Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the Delhi Excise policy case. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in March this year under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for his alleged role in the Delhi excise policy case. The federal agency had last month filed a chargesheet against Kejriwal accusing him of being the «kingpin» in the case. The ED has also chargesheeted the AAP as a co-accused in the case. Vacation Judge Niyay Bindu passed the order today after hearing contentions of ED and Kejriwal over two days. After the pronouncement of the order this evening, the ED requested whether the signing of the bail bond could be deferred by 48 hours so that the order may be challenged before the appellate court. However, the judge turned down ED's request. The bail bond is to be produced before the duty judge tomorrow, the court added. The agency has alleged that Kejriwal demanded ₹100 crore in kickbacks to benefit certain liquor wholesalers in the excise policy. It further alleged that the AAP utilised the bribes in the 2022 Goa assembly elections.

Will challenge HC order scrapping increased quotas in Bihar: Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Thursday vowed to challenge the Patna High Court order setting aside a hike in reservation for deprived castes from 50 per cent to 65 per cent. Choudhary, who is also the state BJP president, asserted his party was «fully in support» of reservations and the state government will move the Supreme Court «after due consultations with legal experts». «It was with the BJP's full support that the Nitish Kumar government ordered the caste survey and raised quotas for Dalits, tribals and backward classes,» said Choudhary, who became deputy CM in January this year after the return of Kumar to the NDA. «We believe that the reservation laws in Bihar were amended in accordance with provisions of the Constitution… states like Tamil Nadu, too, have 69 per cent quotas,» he said.

EC receives applications for EVM verification on 8 LS seats in 6 states
Election Commission has received eight applications from aggrieved candidates, including those from the BJP and the Congress, for verification of tampering or modification in micro-controller chips embedded in the EVMs post declaration of Lok Sabha election results on June 4. Terming the suspicion of manipulation of the electronic voting machines «unfounded», the Supreme Court had on April 26 rejected the demand for reverting to the old paper ballot system. But at the same time, the top court had opened a window for the aggrieved unsuccessful candidates securing second and third places in the poll results and allowed them to seek verification of micro-controller chips embedded in five per cent EVMs per assembly constituency on a written request upon the payment of a fee to the poll panel. BJP's Ahmednagar (Maharashtra) candidate Sujay Vikhe-Patil has sought verification of the machines from 40 polling stations.
