Climate nudge: Let behavioural economics solve the planet’s crisis
In a remarkable judgement delivered on 6 April 2024, a day that should stay marked memorably on our calendar, the Supreme Court of India (SC) recognized that “….the people have a right against the adverse effects of climate change." And that “this right and the right to a clean environment… [is] necessary to articulate... as a distinct right. It is recognised by Articles 14 (right to equality) and 21 (right to life)." The SC judgement clearly spells out that the right to health (under Article 21) is impacted by factors that degrade the environment.

WeWork spurns Adam Neumann, finalises new overhaul deal
WeWork Inc and its major financial backers including SoftBank Group Corp. have struck a new restructuring deal to get the ailing workspace provider out of bankruptcy, spurning a competing financing proposal from co-founder Adam Neumann. WeWork has struck an agreement with senior lenders, who have agreed to provide the business with roughly $450 million in Chapter 11 and exit financing in exchange for equity in the reorganized business. Serajeddini said during a Monday bankruptcy court hearing in New Jersey.

States seek more time for standard rates at hospitals
States and Union Territories have sought more time and wider consultations with all stakeholders including private hospitals, to proceed further on the Supreme Court's February directive to the Central government to work out standard rates for medical procedures and services, according to an affidavit the government filed in the apex court Monday. The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a plea by an association of doctors and hospitals that questioned the government's move to prescribe rates for all hospitals. The matter is slated for hearing on September 10. In response to a public interest litigation filed by an NGO, the apex court had directed the Central government to come up with a concrete proposal specifying standard rates, in consultation with states. The court had warned of applying Central Government Health Scheme rates for treatment services at private facilities until standardised rates were set.

AstraZeneca acknowledges covid vaccine can lead to rare side effect TSS in court; Here's what we know
AstraZeneca has acknowledged that its Covid-19 vaccine can lead to a rare side effect known as Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS). This admission comes as the company faces a lawsuit alleging severe harm and deaths caused by the vaccine, according to The Telegraph. TTS is thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome, which is basically a clot in blood vessels of the brain or elsewhere, along with a low platelet count. It is known to occur in very rare instances following certain types of vaccines and also from other causes. According to the WHO, adenovirus vector vaccines in particular have been rarely associated with this condition. Although COVID vaccines have prevented numerous deaths, reports of these extremely rare but potentially serious immune-mediated events have also been published in reputed journals, said Dr Rajeev Jayadevan, Co-Chairman National IMA COVID Task Force, Kerala. AstraZeneca, which collaborated with the University of Oxford to develop the vaccine, is currently embroiled in legal proceedings initiated by victims and their families. One such case involves Jamie Scott, a father of two, who took legal action after suffering a blood clot that left him unable to work. Scott claims that following his vaccination in April 2021, he developed a «blood clot and a bleed on his brain,» resulting in a lasting brain injury.
