Plea in SC seeks disclosure of electoral bonds sold from Mar 1, 2018, to Apr 11, 2019
Supreme Court seeking disclosure of the details of electoral bonds sold from March 1, 2018, to April 11, 2019, saying voters are entitled to know funding to political parties for the entire period since the start of the scheme. In a landmark verdict last month, the top court scrapped the Centre's electoral bonds scheme that allowed anonymous political funding calling it «unconstitutional» and ordered the State Bank of India (SBI), the authorised financial institution under the scheme, to submit the details of the bonds purchased from April 12, 2019 to February 15, 2024 to the Election Commission of India (ECI). A new application, filed by Citizen's Rights Trust, has submitted that 9,159 bonds worth Rs 4,002 crore have been sold between March 2018 to April 2019 which should also be disclosed. The petition seeks a direction to the SBI to share the details of electoral bonds sold and redeemed from March 1, 2018, to April 11, 2019, including the alphanumeric number, date of purchase, denomination, names of donors and parties to the ECI.

Lok Sabha Polls: 7-phase election in West Bengal proves EC is 'long arm of government', says Kapil Sibal
Kapil Sibal on Sunday said the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal is an evidence that the Election Commission is «a long arm of the government». Sibal also raised questions over the appointment of two election commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu recently, saying they were appointed despite the fact that there is a Constitution bench judgment stating that the Chief Justice of India (CJI) should also be a member of the committee that recommends the names of appointees. «As far as the seven phases (of the Lok Sabha polls in the country) are concerned, that was expected,» he told PTI Videos. «In fact the way they appointed these two election commissioners despite the fact that there is a Constitution bench judgment saying that the CJI should also be a member of the committee. The way they have discarded the Constitution bench decision despite the challenge pending in the Supreme Court and the way they preponed the appointment, only shows that their intention was to have their own people there,» Sibal alleged.

Centre seeks more time to frame policy on online sale of medicines, Delhi High Court grants 'last opportunity'
Centre has urged the Delhi High Court to grant some time to frame a policy on the online sale of medicines on the grounds that the issue was «complex» and any modification in the manner of sale of drugs would have far-reaching consequences. The high court granted the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare four months as a last and final opportunity to frame the policy. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet PS Arora made clear that «if the draft policy is not prepared before the next date of hearing, this court will have no other option but to proceed ahead with the matter». The high court, which was hearing several petitions seeking a ban on the «illegal» sale of drugs online and challenging the draft rules published by the ministry to further amend the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, listed the matter for further hearing on July 8.

"Are all 1,300 companies that donated through bonds thieves?" Acharya Pramod Krishnam amid Oppn barbs at Centre
Opposition volleys over the publication of date on polling funding through electoral bonds on the official portal of the Election Commission (EC), expelled Congress leader Acharya Pramod Krishnam on Saturday asked if the rival parties were suggesting that all the 1,300 firms that made donations via electoral bonds were 'thieves'. Speaking to on Saturday, Acharya Krishnam, who has been taking regular potshots at the Congress since being expelled for 'anti-party activities', said, «All political parties across the world receive donations. Are they (Opposition) suggesting that the 1,300 companies that made political donations through these electoral bonds, the money from which went into nation-building, are thieves? Are they robbers? The money they have donated is now on record. It is in the public domain. Casting aspersions on the contributions that are on record shows the dirty mindset of the Opposition.» Coming down heavily on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who claimed earlier that the BJP was running the «biggest extortion in the world» through the Electoral Bond Scheme, the expelled leader added, «The entire Opposition has started speaking in Rahul-ji's language. This is most unfortunate.»
