Loan fraud case: Arrest of Chanda Kochhar, her husband amounted to abuse of power by CBI, says Bombay High Court
Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a loan fraud case was "without application of mind and due regard to the law", amounting to an "abuse of power", the Bombay High Court has said. A division bench of Justices Anuja Prabhudessai and N R Borkar had on February 6 held the Kochhars' arrest as illegal and confirmed a January 2023 interim order passed by another bench granting them bail. In the order made available on Monday, the court said the CBI has been unable to demonstrate the existence of circumstances or supportive material based on which the decision to arrest was taken.

ED claims court accepted offence by Kejriwal for refusing summons, after AAP asks agency to wait for verdict
Arvind Kejriwal skipped summons by the Enforcement Directorate for the sixth time, sources said that the in the agency claimed that the court has taken cognizance of a complaint by probe agency under Section 174 of the Indian Penal Code against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief. Section 174 pertains to not obeying a legal order to attend a certain place in person or by an agent. The complaint was filed against Kejriwal for intentionally disobeying the first three summons issued to him, sources said.

Calcutta High Court on Monday refused to take up for urgent hearing a PIL seeking protection to women residents of Sandeshkhali area over allegations of sexual atrocities on them by people owing allegiance to ruling Trinamool Congress. A division bench presided by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam asked whether the petitioner is an elected representative like an MLA or a panchayat pradhan or a resident of Sandeshkhali or whether the person visited the affected place, saying that only attaching copies of newspaper reports with the petition will not be enough. The Chief Justice told the lawyer petitioner that the basic requirements of a PIL have to be satisfied for it to be taken up. The petitioner lawyer prayed for an urgent hearing of her public interest litigation (PIL) seeking protection to the women villagers of Sandeshkhali in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district.

Supreme Court on Monday asked low-cost carrier SpiceJet to clear all outstanding dues by March 15 in the ongoing Credit Suisse case. “There is no scope of belated payment. The respondent is not justified in saying so. The very fact that the respondent is in default is apparent from the dateline given,” the SC observed. The SC in September allowed SpiceJet to clear arrears in the airline’s payment to Swiss financial services firm Credit Suisse over a dispute settlement in six months.

Vijay Kirloskar, the founding director and a large shareholder of Bengaluru-based engineering services company TD Power Systems (TDPS), has lodged a complaint with the stock exchanges, accusing the company of omitting and suppressing material facts in the financial results for the quarter ending December 2023.
