Brazil's top court says X paid pending fines to wrong bank
pending fines to the proper bank, postponing its decision on whether to allow the tech firm to resume services in Brazil. The payment of the fines, which X lawyers argued that the company had paid correctly, is the only outstanding measure demanded by the court in order to authorize X to operate again in Brazil. X has been suspended since late August in Brazil, one of its largest and most coveted markets, after not complying with court orders related to hate speech moderation and failing to name a legal representative in the country, as required by law.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq calls for realistic dialogue on Kashmir resolution with BJP government
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday urged the BJP-led central government to be realistic and restart the dialogue process for the resolution of Kashmir issue and follow the path set by former prime ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh. The authorities allowed Mirwaiz to address Friday congregation at historic Jama Masjid after a month-long house arrest for which he has approached J&K High Court as well. The court on Friday directed senior additional advocate general to file response as to whether the petitioner has been put under undeclared house arrest. The case will now be heard in November. «BJP govt should take a realistic approach and accept that we have to resolve this (Kashmir) issue. A precedent in this regard is available with us, like when we spoke with Atalji, Advaniji and Manmohan Singhji, to look for options and a way forward. We need to revisit the same policy if the government wants to resolve this issue,» said Mirwaiz during the Friday congregation. Mirwaiz said that Hurriyat as an organisation may be in disarray after 2019 as several people were arrested and summoned, but it still represents sentiments and emotions of the people of J&K. He said that as long as a part of J&K is in India, a part in Pakistan and some parts in China, especially after 2019, the future of the region is uncertain.

Laddu adulteration just tip of iceberg, much more to be probed, says Andhra Dy CM Pawan Kalyan
Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has said that the laddu adulteration issue is just a tip of the iceberg and there are many more decisions taken during the previous regime that have to be investigated. Addressing a rally here on Thursday, he said he was not blaming the YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy personally for the laddu adulteration, but the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) board, which was constituted during the previous regime. A day before the Supreme Court is expected to hear the case on the allegation of using animal fat in making Tirupati laddu, Kalyan said he wanted to communicate to the judiciary that Jagan was facing several charges including corruption allegations and it has to consider before giving a decision (in laddu adulteration case). «Laddu prasadam adulteration is a tip of the iceberg. We don't know how many crores of rupees they collected during the tenure of (the last) five years. That has to be investigated,» the Deputy CM said.

Joe Biden may move forward with the plan of forgiving student debt just weeks before the US presidential election, and it will also deliver relief to the millions of Americans. As per an estimate by the Center for American Progress, the plan of the Biden administration could benefit many students as well as every four federal student loan holders when it is aligned to the administration's previous effort, as per CNBC. Anxiety over next phase of Israel-Iran escalation: Potential implications on energy, fertiliser prices, shipping, even US prez polls
fertiliser prices, shipping through the Straits of Hormuz in addition to the current disruptions in the Red Sea, the peace and tranquillity in the Gulf and West Asia, and even the US presidential elections. The conflict has seen a step-bystep escalation, starting with the Hamas attack of October 7 last year. Israel, in response, has continued with its air and ground operations in Gaza. More than 40,000 have died from this action, nearly two million displaced and property and infrastructure severely damaged. The population there is suffering from food shortages and break down of health care. Intense multi-country efforts for ceasefire, led by the US, Egypt and Qatar, have floundered, buffeted by Israeli desire for a permanent end or irreplaceable degradation of Hamas military and governance structures, and countervailing Hamas’ demands for the ceasefire to be ‘permanent’. Around 100 Israelis remain hostages since October 7with no clarity on how many may still be alive. Anger against Israel and criticism of its actions in many countries has only grown.

SC strikes down rules facilitating caste discrimination in prisons
Supreme Court on Thursday put an end to caste-based discrimination in prisons dubbing it unconstitutional. A bench, headed by CJI DY Chandrachud, directed the central government to make changes in the jail manuals that perpetuate such practices. The bench ordered that the caste column and any reference to caste in undertrial and/or convicts /prisoners/ registers inside the prisons shall be removed. The bench ruled that such a jail manual, which discriminates by assigning cleaning and sweeping tasks to lower castes and cooking to higher castes, is in violation of Article 15 (which prohibits discrimination against citizens). SC directed the Centre to make necessary changes to address caste-based discrimination in the Model Prison Manual 2016 and Model Prisons and Correctional Services Act 2023. The Centre has been given three months' time to make the said changes.
