After the avoidance of a sovereign debt default in July thanks to a USD 3 billion loan programme of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Pakistan is on a difficult road to economic recovery under a caretaker administration. Reforms related to the bailout, such as loosening import limits and demanding the removal of subsidies, have already fuelled annual inflation, which increased to a record 38.0 per cent in May. In addition, interest rates were increased, and the rupee dropped to record lows.

NEW DELHI : To boost insurance coverage in the rural areas, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) is working on a women-led localized distribution force called Bima Vahak, said a person in the know. The aim is to engage women in raising awareness about the importance of insurance, and educating the rural population about a range of products tailored to their requirements. The final guidelines for this initiative are likely to be released this month, the person added.

MUMBAI : The share of public sector undertakings (PSUs) in the overall market capitalization of the listed universe is at more than a four-year high of 11.34%, a Mint analysis showed, indicating that these companies could be on the path of recovery after reeling under pressure for the past three years. The analysis covered 1,958 BSE-listed stocks, and the data is as of 28 August. As of 31 March, the PSU stocks’ share in the total market capitalization reclaimed the 11% mark, the first time it ended a fiscal year at that level since 31 March 2019.

NEW DELHI : Amid erratic monsoon rainfall, cultivation of essential crops such as pulses, oilseeds, and cotton declined, but the overall cultivated area increased due to a rise in paddy plantation. According to data from the agriculture ministry released on Friday, total kharif planting increased by 4.6% compared to last year, reaching 107.8 million hectares (mh). Paddy cultivation saw a significant boost, rising 14.3% to 39.8 mh.
