California case could deal blow to high-interest online lenders in the US
California judge is poised to decide if an online lender offering small loans at over 150% interest violates state law, which would deal a blow to finance companies that critics argue have skirted rate caps to profit from cash-strapped borrowers. The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) is seeking a ruling that would block Chicago-based Opportunity Financial (OppFi) from offering loans with an interest rate above California's maximum of 36%. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Timothy Dillon is expected to rule any day. Legal experts say that if California wins, it could embolden other states to take action against lenders that make high-interest loans to low-income borrowers using what critics call «rent a bank» partnerships. Critics say the partnerships allow some fintech lenders, which offer quick loans online, to get around the interest-rate caps most states impose on nonbanks by partnering with banks in states like Utah, where there is no interest rate cap. The lenders themselves say the partnerships help smaller state banks compete and fill a void for borrowers with low credit scores who need emergency cash for unexpected expenses like car repairs and medical care. According to a 2022 survey by the Federal Reserve, 37% of adults in the U.S.

F&O Strategy: How to trade Nifty & Bank Nifty on August series expiry?
monthly expiry and traders in the derivatives market can adopt a moderately bullish strategy with Nifty futures while taking a neutral view on Bank Nifty futures, an analyst recommended while spelling out his trading strategy for today. «The sell-off post the gap-up opening on Wednesday showcases the resilience of the bears as they swept away the gains and eventually dragged the index to the lower terrain and below 19,400. Technically, on a closing basis, there are hardly any alterations in the price chart, but with the big bearish candle formation, it is likely that the time-wise correction phase remains intact,» Osho Krishan, Senior Analyst, Technical & Derivative Research at Angel One said. Krishnan sees a strong support at 19,300 with the sheet anchor lying around the 19,250-19,200 zone and 19,500 acting as a strong resistance and only a decisive breakthrough will re-strengthen the undertone in his opinion. Analyst Kunal Shah, Senior Technical & Derivative analyst at LKP Securities also sees strong support in the 19,300-19,250 range and said that a failure to sustain above this level could potentially trigger a continuation of the downward movement.

Headlines
Headlines can be very misleading when it comes to China and India: Manish Singh
Manish Singh, CIO, Crossbridge Capital, says “I remain positive on China. I remain positive on emerging markets. What is going to happen is the pie is going to get bigger. We are going to have big global growth as the power of the US, power of the western world reduces and that means the cost of capital goes down in emerging markets. We have more growth and there will be rapid and bigger global growth. ”Let me begin with the Q2 US economic data. It is fair to say that even though it is slightly below estimates, 2.1% is telling us that things are back on track. There is definitely a recovery in the US economy and recession fears are receding. Is that a fair interpretation of the numbers?Anything at 2% and over is something that everyone should be very pleased about and it just keeps the recession fears at bay.

Hurricane Idalia hits Florida with 125 mph winds, flooding streets, snapping trees and cutting power
Idalia tore into Florida at the speed of a fast-moving train Wednesday, splitting trees in half, ripping roofs off hotels and turning small cars into boats before sweeping into Georgia as a still-powerful storm that flooded roadways and sent residents running for higher ground. «All hell broke loose,» said Belond Thomas of Perry, a mill town located just inland from the Big Bend region where Idalia came ashore. Thomas fled with her family and some friends to a motel, thinking it would be safer than riding out the storm at home. But as Idalia's eye passed over about 8:30 a.m., a loud whistling noise pierced the air and the high winds ripped the building's roof off, sending debris down on her pregnant daughter, who was lying in bed.
