UPS Citi Provident BLOCK cover Inside Life inside the 'hijacked' Johannesburg building where scores burned alive
Johannesburg, Sihle Dube had rented a tiny room from someone who didn't actually own it, in a rundown building that was becoming a trash-strewn haven for drugs and crime. On Thursday, he awoke to a bang at 2 a.m. — one of the few things he would remember about that night was seeing the time on his phone — and jumped up to check the entrance to his apartment. UPS Manufacturing show voice cover Applying to a college abroad? Here's how AI tools might hurt, or help
I cover education technology at The New York Times. And I've been thinking a lot about how artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT, which can manufacture school essays and other texts, might reshape the college application process. I was particularly interested to learn whether admissions officials were rejiggering their essay questions — or even reconsidering personal essays altogether. Amid a deluge of high school transcripts and teacher recommendations, admissions officers often use students' writing samples to identify applicants with unique voices, experiences, ideas and potential. How might that change now that many students are using AI chatbots to brainstorm topics, generate rough drafts and hone their essays? To find out, I contacted admissions officials at more than a dozen large state universities, Ivy League schools and small private colleges, including Juan Espinoza, the director of undergraduate admissions at Virginia Tech.

The Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has extended the distance learning measures initially put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. These measures have significant implications for international students seeking a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Under the extended guidelines, students who completed less than 50% of their PGWP-eligible studies outside of Canada will remain eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) until December 31, 2023. Before the pandemic, international students were required to ensure that no more than 50% of their studies were conducted online, and any time spent studying online outside of Canada did not count towards their PGWP eligibility. However, due to the restrictions on international travel brought about by the pandemic, IRCC had temporarily removed the online study restrictions for certain students. These students fall into two categories:
