India in trouble at 34-6 on 2nd day of rain-affected 1st test against New Zealand
New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee clean-bowled India captain Rohit Sharma, star Virat Kohli was out for a duck as were three other Indian batters and the troubled home side was 34-6 at lunch on the second day of the rain-affected opening cricket test Thursday. Sharma, who won the toss and decided to bat, was out for 2 in the seventh over and Kohli, caught by Glenn Phillips off the bowling of William O'Rourke — who took 3-13 — was out two overs later without adding to India's then-total of nine runs. Sarfaraz Khan also left the field without scoring in the next over with India 10-3 and leaving Sharma possibly questioning his decision to bat first. In between the toss and the start of play, the skies darkened and lights had to be turned on before play could begin at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Central banks are like wicketkeepers; always in spotlight during failures: RBI DG
Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor Swaminathan J has likened central banks to wicketkeepers in cricket or goalkeepers in football who often go unnoticed in successes but are always in the spotlight during failures. In his address at the RBI@90 High Level Conference on 'Central banking at Cross Roads' on Monday said over the years, the role of central banks has significantly evolved. Initially seen as the lender of last resort, today, central banks are equipped with a broad range of tools — regulatory, supervisory, and monetary — to ensure the stability of the financial system. The financial sector, he said, is the backbone of the economy, enabling efficient allocation of resources, managing risks through various instruments, and ensuring smooth payments and settlements. It performs crucial functions that support investments and drives economic growth.

IPL franchises' pay packets get bigger and heavier
Indian Premier League Governing Council (IPL GC) has increased the total salary cap for the 2025 season by 33% year-on-year to ₹146 crore, up from ₹110 crore in the 2024 season. The salary cap will rise further to ₹151 crore and ₹157 crore for the 2026 and 2027 IPL seasons, respectively. The total salary cap now includes the auction purse, incremental performance pay, and match fees. For the 2024 season, the total salary cup did not include match fees, which has just been introduced. The auction purse for the franchises has been set at ₹120 crore for IPL 2025. These decisions were made at an IPL Governing Council meeting held in Bengaluru on Saturday, where the Player Regulations for 2025-2027 were finalised. The IPL GC's decision followed a constructive dialogue with the owners of the 10 franchises in July at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters.

AGM: Duleep Trophy likely to return to zonal format from next season
Duleep Trophy is set to return to its traditional zonal from next year after the state units gave a thumbs down to the four-team concept introduced this season. The red-ball event featured four teams — India A, India B, India C, India D. India A beat India C to win the competition earlier this month. Usually, six teams from as many zones — central, east, west, north, south and north east — take part in the tournament, providing more opportunities to the players from their respective zones. «The state units felt the format used this season did not give a fair representation to the players from their respective zones. The traditional zonal format gives players more opportunities zone wise and that is what was conveyed in the AGM today,» a state unit official told PTI after the BCCI AGM in Bengaluru.
