Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as head coach an expected but also a left-field choice
Indian cricket was confirmed on Tuesday evening (July 9) when Jay Shah, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), announced that Gautam Gambhir would be the next head coach of the senior men’s team. Gambhir’s appointment is an expected one, an obvious one even, but oddly, also a slightly left-field choice. It was expected in that he was the preferred candidate of the powers that be. It was obvious in that he had relinquished his position as a member of parliament and simultaneously succeeded in guiding his IPL team to a trophy. It’s left field because Gambhir has no previous coaching experience whatsoever. Gambhir has not coached a state team in the Ranji Trophy, he has not worked with a zonal or national age-group team and even in the IPL. He has been a mentor and a director of cricket of sorts rather than a hands-on coach. In the IPL, Gambhir has had a phalanx of coaches under him to run day-to-day operations while he focussed on the bigger picture.

Ravi Shastri wants fewer test teams, MCC chief backs T20 in changing landscape
test cricket to six or seven teams and using the 20-overs format as the vehicle to spread the game were some of the views aired at a symposium organised by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) on Sunday. Test cricket's dwindling appeal outside India, England and Australia has coincided with the proliferation of lucrative T20 leagues across the world. Although test cricket at the top level still often produces drama, the brevity and action-packed nature of 20-overs cricket has quickly made it the preferred format for the game's new fans.

T20 World Cup champions likely to scoop up more brand deals
brands endorsed by top Indian cricketers is likely to swell after the historic victory at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup as the deals that were being negotiated will get fast-tracked, said sports marketing experts. India's leading sports marketing agency, Rise Worldwide, which manages Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya, had signed about 10 endorsement deals before the T20 World Cup and is expecting the numbers to go up in the coming days. Between the four cricketers, they endorse 89 brands across 35-40 categories. Audio, wearables, nutrition, insurance, automobiles, grooming, home decor, and fitness apps are some of the major categories that Rise is focusing on. «What this result (the T20 World Cup win) does is fast-track a lot of deals that were being negotiated,» said Rise Worldwide head Nikhil Bardia, adding that the value of the deals will be determined by market dynamics and the brand that the cricketers create for themselves.

Rahul Dravid earns praise from Anand Mahindra after former India coach refuses Rs 2.5 crore extra bonus
Anand Mahindra lauded Rahul Dravid, calling him a true role model and highlighting the mark of his character. Mahindra’s praise came in response to Dravid's commendable decision regarding a an extra bonus offered by the BCCI. According to a Press Trust of India report, former India head coach Rahul Dravid recently refused an additional bonus of Rs 2.5 crore offered by the BCCI following India’s T20 World Cup triumph in the Americas. Despite the board’s intention to reward him with Rs 5 crore, equal to the players' bonuses, Dravid chose to accept only the due amount of Rs 2.5 crore, what the other coaching staff got. Dravid’s tenure as India coach was originally set to end after the previous year’s 50-over World Cup, but he stayed on through the T20 World Cup at the behest of skipper Rohit Sharma and the BCCI, who felt it was too short notice to bring in a new coach. After successfully concluding his tenure as India’s head coach with a World Cup win, Dravid is contemplating his next career move. There are speculations about him joining an IPL franchise as a mentor. However, for now, he seems keen on taking a step back to relax after over two years of intense coaching.
