Bihar faces crisis with over a dozen bridge collapses affecting daily travel
Bihar, is clinging to a single, wobbly pillar. “Even if we walk on it, the bridge shakes,” says Pratima Devi, Bharti’s wife, calling it a bridge to hell. “Hamara bank, bazaar sab udhar na hai, kiya kore (Our bank, market are all on that side, what can we do)?” she asks. Then, a buffalo herder comes with his animals. He warily releases them in ones and twos across the bridge, wondering if it might collapse under their hoofs. About 320 km southeast of Siwan, Ajay Yadav recalls witnessing a huge bridge collapsing not once, but thrice, in Sultanganj. Pointing towards the bridge that is under construction, he says, “I don’t know if this bridge will ever be completed, but even if it does, I’ll wait for months before I dare to use it.”

September to witness above average rainfall
India is likely to see above-average rainfall this month and a delayed withdrawal of monsoon showers, the weather office said, raising concern that it may hit output of kharif crops such as pulses, oilseeds, and fruits and vegetables. Rainfall is likely to be more than 109% of a 50-year average, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director-general of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday. Above-normal rainfall is likely over most parts of India, except some parts of the extreme north, many parts of south peninsular India, and most parts of the northeastern region where normal to below-normal rainfall is likely.

White House races to lend billions in climate funds before election
The $400 billion federal clean-energy lending program that has faced criticism for moving too slow is stepping up efforts to push cash out the door before the election. The Energy Department’s Loan Programs Office was turbocharged by the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, which gave it hundreds of billions of dollars to lend to clean-energy businesses. So far, it has only used a tiny fraction of that capacity.

Despite directions from Trump to stop all aid to Pakistan till it stops giving safe havens to terrorists, McMaster in his latest book 'At War with Ourselves: My Tour of Duty in the Trump White House' says that the then Defence Secretary Jim Mattis was planning to deliver a military aid package to Islamabad that included over USD 150 million worth of armoured vehicles. However, the aid was stopped after his intervention, McMaster writes in the book that hit the bookstores this week.

US consumer spending picks up; inflation rises moderately in July
consumer spending increased solidly in July, suggesting the economy remained on firmer ground early in the third quarter and arguing against a half-percentage-point interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve next month. Consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, rose 0.5% last month after advancing by an unrevised 0.3% in June, the Commerce Department reported on Friday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast spending would accelerate by 0.5%. This implies that consumer spending maintained most of the momentum from the second quarter, when it helped to boost gross domestic product growth to a 3.0% annualized rate. The economy grew at a 1.4% pace in the January-March quarter.

Donald Trump seeks to activate his base at Moms for Liberty gathering but risks alienating moderate voters
Donald Trump is scheduled to appear on Friday at the annual gathering of Moms for Liberty, a national nonprofit that has spearheaded efforts to get mentions of LGBTQ+ identity and structural racism out of K-12 classrooms. In a «fireside chat» conversation in the nation's capital, the former president will seek to shore up support and enthusiasm among a major part of his base. The bulk of the group's 130,000-plus members are conservatives who agree with him that parents should have more say in public education and that racial equity programs and transgender accommodations don't belong in schools. Yet Trump also will run the risk of alienating more moderate voters, many of whom see Moms for Liberty's activism as too extreme to be legitimized by a presidential nominee. A year ago, Moms for Liberty was viewed by many as a rising power player in conservative politics that could be pivotal in supporting the Republican ticket. The group's membership had skyrocketed after its launch in 2021, fuelled by parents protesting mandatory masking for students and remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jharkhand: JMM's Ramdas Soren replaces Champai Soren, sworn in as cabinet minister
Ramdas Soren, a legislator of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), was sworn in as a minister in the Jharkhand government on Friday, replacing former Chief Minister Champai Soren in the state cabinet. This transition took place when Champai Soren resigned from his positions earlier in the week. Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Ramdas Soren at Raj Bhavan in Ranchi. The ceremony saw the presence of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, senior JMM-led alliance leaders, and several government officials. Ramdas Soren’s induction came after Champai Soren resigned from his ministerial position and his role as an MLA on Wednesday. Reports indicate that Champai Soren is set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) later today.
