Hyderabad moving towards Bengaluru-like water crisis? Indian Institute of Science study suggests shocking similarities
Comparing the statistics between the two cities, the Indian Institute of Science's latest study underscores a striking resemblance. Over the years, Bengaluru's urban sprawl has surged from a mere 8 per cent in 1973 to a whopping 93.3 per cent in 2023, marking an unprecedented 1055 per cent increase in concrete structures. This unchecked expansion has led to a drastic 79 per cent reduction in water spread area, significantly impacting water availability. Hyderabad's trajectory isn't too far off. Data from the municipal administration and urban development department (MAUD) indicates a substantial surge in commercial and residential built-up areas. Between 2010 and 2014, the city witnessed a growth of 50.7 million square feet (sft) in commercial built-up area, followed by an expansion of 100.4 million sft from 2015 to 2019. Additionally, the built-up residential area saw a surge of over 500 million sft from 2015 to 2021. Although precise current figures are unavailable, experts estimate a surge of 70 per cent to 80 per cent in the last three years.

US announces extension of work permits for some categories of immigrants
Immigration Services (USCIS) has unveiled a temporary final rule (TFR) to make work permits more accessible to immigrants. This move builds upon recent efforts to modernize immigration processes, particularly regarding eligibility for employment authorization documents (EADs). Under the new rule, the automatic 180-day period for certain EADs will be extended to 540 days. This decision follows substantial improvements in EAD processing times over the past year, ensuring that work-authorized noncitizens do not face interruptions in their employment status while awaiting USCIS decisions on EAD renewal applications. By extending the validity period of EADs, the USCIS aims to maintain continuity for both immigrants and US employers. The Biden Administration has been actively working to integrate work-authorized individuals into the labor force, thereby supporting local economies.

Airtel versus Jio: More shots fired in the satcom space battle
Airtel and Reliance Jio, found themselves on a new battlefront — the satellite communication or satcom, a futuristic technology that promises to revolutionise India's telecom sector. Companies such as Reliance Jio’s JV with Luxembourg-based SES; Starlink; Amazon; Bharti-backed OneWeb; and the Tata-Telesat combine are working on creating a constellation of satellites to deliver ‘broadband-from-space’ services in India. India's current telecom market has just two big players, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, but satcom will attract more big players. Since satcom does not require installation of towers on earth, the entry barrier is not as formidable as it is in traditional terrestrial mobile telecom.
