Is your child addicted to reels? Here’s what doctors want you to know before it’s too late
Lancet that found one in three kids is seriously hooked on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and X. They’re not just casually browsing either—many are obsessively counting likes and binge-watching reels. Even more concerning, about 11% of these young users are showing signs of addiction, including feeling jittery or anxious when they can’t get their screen time fixed. Doctors said these findings were a major red flag. According to the research, the rise in social media use over the last 15 years has gone hand-in-hand with a rise in mental health issues and self-harm among kids and young adults aged 10-24. As per TOI, health experts in Delhi urged parents to find a balance, as too much screen time without guidance could negatively impact young people’s mental and emotional well-being. In the TOI report, Dr. Prashant Goyal, a senior psychiatry consultant at Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute, suggested that parents set screen-time limits and monitor their child’s social media habits. He also believed schools could play a huge role in promoting mental health and teaching kids how to use digital media wisely.

Elon Musk's $1 million-a-day voter giveaway can proceed, great news for Donald Trump?
However, it looks like Musk can now proceed as planned as a Pennsylvania court has ruled that the decision to shut the petition down has been duly rejected, and the next phases of the announcements of the receivers will follow. The initiation of the legal action against this million-dollar giveaway began with District Attorney Larry Krasner, a Democrat, who had called the process a scam and a ploy 'designed to influence a national election' and demanded that it be shut down. However, Common Pleas Court Judge Angelo Foglietta did not pay heed to his wording and ruled in Musk's favor. Meanwhile, Musk's lawyer Chris Gober explained that the final two recipients of the giveaway before the presidential election will be in Arizona on Monday and Michigan.

Regulate AI use not the technology
sectoral approach to AI regulation, rather than a one-size-fits-all law, are growing louder. Jensen Huang, CEO of AI chip giant Nvidia, said at ET Conversations in Mumbai recently, “We should regulate AI in the context of every application. When you use AI as an accountant, that accountant should be regulated. When you use AI as a lawyer, that lawyer should be regulated. When you use AI as a doctor, that doctor should be regulated.” To be sure, AI is already subject to the country’s existing provisions on data privacy, cybersecurity and copyright laws. Industry leaders say the need therefore is to plug gaps or clarify how existing regulations would apply to AI in specific ways.

The art and craft of earning in times of AI
generative AI image and video models, said Alexandru Costin, vice president of GenAI at Adobe. Instead of fearing loss of work opportunities in the GenAI era, designers, photographers and illustrators are embracing the new technology. They are adding a new income stream for each digital asset they create for model training, he said. The company, which has built a proprietary family of text-to-image and text-to-video GenAI models known as Firefly, says it is running “content missions,” which identifies gaps in training data (images and videos) and rewards contributors who fulfil these missions. “We put missions on Adobe Stock and tell contributors that we have a gap,” Costin said. “For example, if we don’t have photos of Indian culture of a select province, we put out a stock mission inviting photos and videos with this particular cultural characteristic.”

‘Cyber defenders world over facing tremendous operations complexity’
Microsoft Security, pointing to the rapid escalation of cyberattacks. “Just in 2021, we had 579 attacks per second (identity or password related attacks) and that number now is 7,000 attacks per second,” she told ET. “That’s a 10x increase. We’re seeing that human operated ransomware is also on an exponential rise, with a 275% increase in ransomware from 2022 to 2024. And cybercrime as an anti-economy is costing the world $8 trillion every single year.” Jakkal said that “defenders” the world over are facing tremendous operational complexity as it is a fragmented ecosystem with numerous tools that they must stitch together and figure out the insights. What compounds the challenge is that there is a shortfall of four million cybersecurity experts globally, she said.

Centre to curb unauthorised use of PAN details by tech companies
government prepares to notify the Digital Private Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP), law enforcement authorities are cracking down on almost every unauthorised use of personally identifiable information (PII) by technology companies. In one of the latest moves, the Union home ministry through the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) has asked to shut down any unauthorised use of Pan (Permanent Account Number) of Indian citizens by fintechs and other consumer technology companies, according to three people in the know. “This was known as a ‘Pan enrichment’ service, which would help loan distribution companies create a profile of their customers against their Pan numbers, for cross sell of credit and other financial products,” said a top executive at a fintech firm on the condition of anonymity. “Sometimes this data was also used to cross check the details put in by the customer in his or her application form,” he added.

Tracking global AI policy play
AI are being discussed by policymakers the world over. While some like the EU have been early movers in regulating the technology, others are opting to wait and watch. The US, for one, has taken a lighttouch approach to AI regulations so far. India does not have an AI law but it has rolled out the `10K-cr IndiaAI Mission earlier this year. The mission is indicative of India’s approach — to focus on building AI capabilities through computing infrastructure, skills, datasets and support for AI innovators.

US election results: Is Donald Trump winning battleground state Pennsylvania against Kamala Harris? Exit polls have answers
Kamala Harris is spending all of Monday in Pennsylvania. Donald Trump plans four rallies in three states, beginning in Raleigh, North Carolina and stopping twice in Pennsylvania with events in Reading and Pittsburgh and also going to Michigan. Pennsylvania is the biggest prize among the battleground states, offering 19 of the 270 Electoral College votes a candidate needs to win the presidency. Pennsylvania's 19 electoral votes offer the largest prize among the states expected to determine the Electoral College outcome. Nonpartisan U.S. election analysts calculate Harris needs to win about 45 electoral votes on top of the states she is expected to win easily to capture the White House, while Trump would need about 51.
