Blackstone eyes leading role in Disney India reel
Blackstone, the world’s largest private equity firm, has initiated discussions with the Walt Disney Co to evaluate buying the media giant’s India streaming and television business, said people aware of the matter. The senior India leadership of both companies have held multiple meetings in recent weeks. Blackstone is exploring either buying the business partially — a combination of assets including sports properties and media rights, and the Disney+ Hotstar streaming service — or the whole portfolio that also includes its linear TV franchise such as the flagship Star India TV network, OTT and a 30% stake in Tata Play (Tata Sky earlier), the people said. It is widely believed that Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs — two former Disney executives who have been brought back this July by chief executive Bob Iger as advisers to help him navigate the company’s legacy television business and the ESPN sports network — have been the key catalysts to bring Blackstone to the discussion table.

Amazon antitrust lawsuit likely to be long and arduous journey for FTC
Amazon is heading into one of its biggest sales events of the year — Prime Day — with a lawsuit hanging over its head that accuses it of preventing sellers from hawking their merchandise at lower prices on other sites. The Federal Trade Commission's long-awaited antitrust case is the agency's most aggressive move yet to tame the market power of Amazon, a company that's become synonymous with online shopping and fast deliveries. Under chair Lina Khan, the agency hasn't been shy about taking big swings against some of America's biggest companies and testing the limits of competition law to reverse what many of her supporters see as decades of weak antitrust enforcement.

Neither DPI hype nor false modesty serves our interests
₹2,400. While all the arguments so far suggest that India massaged the truth to its benefit, the main thrust of the piece is that the India achieved its success through “gratuitous acts of coercion." This, the article suggests, ought not to have been the case—that we should have, instead, allowed the free play of market forces. It is this top-down approach—this “unnecessary paternalism"—that it comes down hardest on.

Competition regulator to soon release 'leniency-plus' regulations to bust cartels
Competition Commission of India (CCI) will soon come out with regulations around the proposed leniency-plus regime, which will encourage companies under investigation for cartelisation to report other cartels and get their own penalties reduced, chairperson Ravneet Kaur said on Tuesday. The leniency-plus regime was proposed in the Competition (Amendment) Act 2023. It is aimed at creating a structure that will incentivise companies under scrutiny for spilling secrets of other cartels. The regulator will soon seek stakeholder comments for the regulations and finalise them, Kaur said in her first press conference after taking over as the head of the CCI in May. Kaur said competition authorities of the BRICS grouping will meet this week to deliberate on existing and emerging anti-trust issues, with India hosting the conference after a gap of 10 years.
