Asix months’ grace period was something I learnt to negotiate in assignments as one of the first women working in the infrastructure sector. When I was posted in the ports sub-sector, or in a large infrastructure project, many would question my suitability as a woman officer for a role in a male-dominated field. Inevitably, I would ‘beg’ for six months before a decision was taken to re-post me to an assignment considered more conducive for a woman officer.

UK general election: Record number of Indian-origin MPs elected to Parliament
record number of around 28 Indian-origin members of Parliament have been elected to the House of Commons in the UK's general election as results were announced on Friday, with several Conservatives surviving an overall brutal outcome for their party. Outgoing prime minister Rishi Sunak leads the Tory charge of British Indians holding on to their seats, with a decisive win in his Richmond and Northallerton constituency in Yorkshire. It would have come as small consolation for the Tory leader, who saw his party haemorrhage over 200 seats as the Labour Party's landslide victory unfolded. «On this difficult night, I would like to express my gratitude to the people of the Richmond and Northallerton constituency for your continued support. Since I moved here a decade ago, you have made me and my family feel so at home and I look forward to serving you for years to come,» said Sunak, in a message clearly aimed at dismissing pre-election chatter around his future plans as a politician. Other prominent British Indian Tories holding on to their seats included former home secretaries, Suella Braverman and Priti Patel, as did Sunak's Goan-origin Cabinet ally Claire Coutinho.

Heavy rains throw Mumbai air traffic out of gear
rains in Mumbai wreaked havoc on transportation, impacting not only roads and railways but also air travel. Operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) were significantly disrupted, leading to the diversion of 27 flights and the cancellation of over 50 others. The primary cause of the disruption was heavy rainfall and low visibility, which forced the suspension of runway operations from 2:22 am to 3:40 am on Monday, August 7, 2024. Following the resumption of operations, CSMIA prioritized incoming flights, resulting in potential delays for departing passengers. «The airport is currently working to accommodate the diverted flights and any additional schedule changes caused by the weather event,» a CSMIA spokesperson said.
