Lowe's Apple Discover DNA Inside Soil microorganisms offer potential solution to Patulin toxin in food
Patulin, a mycotoxin produced by various fungi, poses a threat to a wide range of organisms, including humans, mammals, plants, and microbes. This mycotoxin is commonly found on damaged or decaying fruits, especially apples, and can contaminate various apple-based products like applesauce, apple juice, jams, and ciders, especially in environments with subpar hygiene during food production. The global concern over patulin toxicity encompasses a range of health issues, from nausea and lung congestion to ulcers, intestinal hemorrhages, and more severe consequences such as DNA damage, immunosuppression, and an increased risk of cancer. Consequently, numerous governments worldwide have imposed limits on the permissible levels of patulin in food items, particularly in baby food. Addressing patulin toxicity involves multiple treatment approaches, including oxygen therapy, immunotherapy, detoxification therapy, and nutrient therapy.

FIVE DNA Destiny performer Study finds adding zinc to farmland soil can prove helpful in preventing childhood stunting in India
zinc to farmland soil can help prevent childhood stunting — a condition due to chronic undernutrition — in India, according to a study. Chronic undernutrition is associated with poor brain development and long-lasting harmful consequences, such as reduced school performance and increased disease risks, the researchers said. The study, published recently in the journal Scientific Reports, is the first large-scale research to examine the association between children's nutritional status or health outcomes and soil mineral availability in India, where more than a third of children under five suffer from stunting. «Our results add to a growing body of literature suggesting that interventions like micronutrient-enriched fertilisers may have a positive effect on health,» said study lead author Claire Morton, an undergraduate student in mathematics and computational science at Stanford University, US. «This doesn't prove that those interventions would be cost-effective for India, but it's an exciting indication that they are worth testing,» Morton said. The researchers analysed health data from nearly 300,000 (3 lakh) children and one million women across India with over 27 million soil tests drawn from a nationwide soil health programme.

DNA Duke Biogen show Inside Experimental blood test may be able to detect Parkinson's disease-related DNA damage, says study
blood test that detected Parkinson's disease in a preliminary study could become the first specific tool for diagnosing the devastating neurodegenerative condition, researchers said on Wednesday. The test, which looks for cell damage associated with the disease, is years away from being commercially available. If its reliability is confirmed in future trials, the test would allow doctors to diagnose the condition earlier and start therapies sooner, before nervous system damage worsens, the researchers said. «Currently, Parkinson's disease is diagnosed largely based on symptoms, when patients already have significant neurological damage,» said study leader Laurie Sanders of Duke School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina. The new blood test measures DNA damage in mitochondria, the structures inside cells that generate energy for cellular functions.

Continental Yellow DNA Southern show New archaeological discovery sheds light on ancient cultures: 4,000-year-old polychrome wall found in Northern Peru
Peru is believed to be over 4,000 years old and could have been part of a ceremonial temple, according to archaeologists, offering new insights into the region's historic cultures. The wall was first stumbled upon by farmers in 2020 during harvesting work, prompting an extended dig and work to determine its origins, said archaeologist Feren Castillo, head of a research project in the coastal region of La Libertad. «Three years later we started a new procedure whose results showed us its age… Today we are sure it's a building built during the Pre-ceramic Period (the initial period of the Andean civilizations) between 4,000 and 4,500 years ago», the expert said this week", the expert said this week. The remains of the ancient building were revealed in the Viru Valley, some 480 km (298 miles) north of Lima. The wall is estimated to be about three meters (9.84 feet) high and presents triangular geometric lines with occasional shades of red and yellow, Castillo added.

UPS FIVE DNA ULA Restoring vision: Groundbreaking procedure uses stem cells to treat eye injuries
eye bore the brunt of the 2017 work accident, which stole his vision, left him unable to tolerate light and triggered four to five cluster headaches a day. Then he underwent an experimental procedure that aims to treat severe injuries in one eye with stem cells from the other. «I went from completely blind with debilitating headaches and pondering if I could go another day — like really thinking I can't do this anymore» to seeing well enough to drive and emerging from dark places literally and figuratively, he said, choking up. The 51-year-old from Homewood, Alabama, was one of four patients to get stem cell transplants as part of the first U.S. study to test the technique, which could someday help thousands. Though additional treatment is sometimes needed, experts say the stem cell transplant offers hope to people with few if any other options. Results of the early-stage research were published Friday in the journal Science Advances, and a larger study is now underway.
