Missing investment proofs that put salaried taxpayers on the taxman’s radar
In December 2025, several salaried taxpayers received emails and SMS alerts from the income tax department flagging discrepancies in deductions and exemptions claimed in their income tax returns (ITR).The alerts said certain claims did not match employer-reported salary data or other system records and needed revision. Most of the flagged cases involved returns where exemptions or deductions were claimed in the ITR but did not reflect in Form 16, said Nemin Shah, director at EQX Business Consultancy. If an employer deducted tax assuming fewer deductions, but the employee later claimed a larger set of exemptions directly in the return, it resulted in a refund of excess TDS. “Seeking a big refund results in the system likely taking notice and flagging it,” said Shah. This is where the annual investment declaration and proof-submission window with employers becomes critical.Every year, in January or February, employers ask employees to submit proof of investments and expenses declared at the start of the financial year.

A wish list for 2026: Much can be done by the government as it confronts the challenges India faces
₹100 to the dollar.Former chief economic advisor Arvind Subramanian argued this week in the Indian Express that ₹100 per dollar is a worthy new-year resolution for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), not least because China and East Asia have kept their currencies cheap to exploit foreign markets: “The markets are trying to do a desirable job that policymakers have been unable or unwilling to do.”Indian companies are savvy enough to hedge their currency exposure. We should do more to help our most labour-intensive industries: ‘Make in India’ needs to be rebranded as ‘Hand-Make in India.’ A much-needed pen-stroke reform, says Laila Tyabji, founder of Dastkar, is to “simply remove GST on handlooms; it needlessly increases the paperwork and end price.”I buy handloom or hand-dyed cotton and walk 400 metres from my apartment to a tailor who adeptly makes shirts out of Kerala mundu material and even delicate jamdani that looks like candyfloss.Consider renaming Ease of Doing Business as a more truthful ‘unease of doing business,’ thus focusing on reducing the complexity of dealing with the government. It is wonderful, of course, that we can pay our taxes online almost as easily as buying a book off Amazon, but our tax system is still too complex and does little to widen the tax base. In fact, the last budget arguably narrowed it by raising the income threshold for income tax.In a country as unequal as ours, we need an inheritance tax.

'Part of BJP's agenda of polarization': Congress' Harish Rawat on Waqf Amendment Bill
Bharatiya Janata Party over the Waqf Amendment Bill, calling it a «part of the party's agenda of polarization.» Speaking with ANI, Rawat said, «Earlier also when amendments were made in the bill, questions were raised and we resolved them through discussions but you (government) are not resolving them...It seems that this is also a part of the BJP's agenda of polarization.» Additionally, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram urged the government not to pass the law, noting the «sensitivities» of people associated with the waqf board. «This is a matter of faith and it is a matter of practising religion and it is a property donated voluntarily for a religious purpose. The government should be aware of the sensitivities, respect the sensitivities and take people along and not pass the law just because they have a majority in the House,» Chidambaram said. He also added that the BJP is bringing the bill to «send a signal» to their core voters.

India dismisses NYT report on HAL re-routing sensitive tech to Russia, calls it 'factually incorrect and misleading'
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday strongly rejected a report published by The New York Times, calling it «factually incorrect and misleading.» Official sources stated that the report misrepresented facts and framed issues to suit a particular political narrative. Responding to allegations concerning Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a state-owned defence company, the MEA asserted that HAL has always complied with international rules on strategic trade controls and end-user commitments. «We (Ministry of External Affairs) have seen a report published by The New York Times. The said report is factually incorrect and misleading. It has tried to frame issues and distort facts to suit a political narrative. The Indian entity (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited-HAL) mentioned in the report has scrupulously followed all its international obligations on strategic trade controls and end-user commitments,» MEA sources told news agency ANI. The ministry also highlighted India's strong legal and regulatory framework for strategic trade. It reaffirmed that all Indian companies conducting business overseas are guided by these regulations. «India’s robust legal and regulatory framework on strategic trade continues to guide overseas commercial ventures by its companies. We expect reputed media outlets to undertake basic due diligence while publishing such reports, which obviously was overlooked in the instant case,» sources added.
