Donald Trump inherits Biden economy at a tricky time
Donald Trump will inherit, to all appearances, a solid economy when he assumes the presidency in January. After all, the stock market is at record highs, unemployment is low by historical standards and gross domestic product has been expanding at a healthy pace of around 2.5% so far this year. Yet there’s a reason for voter dissatisfaction with the economy and, beneath the surface, there are several risks for Trump 2.0 as he thinks about enacting his trade and fiscal agenda. Let’s start with jobs. Trump took over a stable labor market in 2017, with the unemployment rate falling throughout the previous year and payroll growth steady at roughly 200,000 a month. That’s not true this time around: The jobless rate has been on the rise, hiring is below normal and payroll growth has cooled since the first quarter. The three-month average for private payrolls additions at 78,000 from June to August was the slowest since 2010 outside of the pandemic period. (The September number is still subject to revision and October was heavily affected by a strike and hurricanes). The level of job openings relative to the size of the workforce has fallen back to pre-Covid levels and continues to decline. While the deterioration in the labor market has been gradual, Trump’s team will need to reverse this negative momentum quickly if he wants to sustain the economic expansion and hold on to his electoral gains in the 2026 midterm elections.

If Trump tries to fire Powell, Fed Chair is ready for a legal fight
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. When a frustrated Donald Trump flirted with removing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell in a dispute over interest rates back in 2018, Fed leaders privately readied a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency response: a legal challenge against the president to protect the integrity of America’s central bank. Powell told then-Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin that he would fight his removal if sought by the president, according to people familiar with the matter.

IISc, TalentSprint to offer space-tech certificate programme
Space Manufacturing and Tech, Satellite and Navigation Systems, Propulsion, and Mission Design. Space startups have also said that they are willing to pay a premium for individuals with the right skill set. TalentSprint's founder, CEO and MD Santanu Paul told ET that the company has consistently anticipated market trends, as seen with AI and fintech when those industries were in their early stages, by launching various executive courses. «This is an attempt to create the talent pool and ‘expertise building’ for the space economy in India,» he said. «If India aims to become a 100 billion USD space economy by 2040, I believe that a 100 billion USD industry will naturally support at least a billion dollars' worth of education.»

Foreign companies pull more money from China's shaky economy
China last quarter, a sign that some investors are still pessimistic even as Beijing rolls out stimulus measures aimed at stabilizing growth. China's direct investment liabilities in its balance of payments dropped $8.1 billion in the third quarter, according to data from the State Administration of Foreign Exchange released late Friday. The gauge, which measures foreign direct investment in China, was down almost $13 billion for the first nine months of the year. Foreign investment into China has slumped in the past three years after hitting a record in 2021, a casualty of geopolitical tensions, pessimism about the world's second-largest economy and stronger competition from Chinese domestic firms in industries such as cars. Should the decline continue for the rest of the year, it would be the first annual net outflow in FDI since at least 1990, when comparable data begins.

Exploration, monetisation of natural gas will benefit Northeast: IGX
monetisation of natural gas deposits in the northeastern region can help cut down its import, while also boosting the local economy and providing more trade opportunities, a top official of the Indian Gas Exchange (IGX) said. Rajesh K Mediratta, Managing Director and CEO of IGX, the country's first automated national level gas exchange, maintained that the region can supply the surplus gas not only to other parts of the country, but also to neighbouring Bangladesh and earn significant revenue. «The Northeast has tremendous potential in the production of natural gas. As the Northeast Gas Grid is likely to become operational by 2026, the deposit of 6 million MMSCMD of natural gas can be monetised by the existing producers,» Mediratta said. «This will add to the country's energy security as IGX will help gas producers sell the surplus gas to the other regions,» he said, while speaking at a seminar on 'Gas Market Development for North East' here on Friday.

Diversifying Horizons: Why Indians should consider investing abroad despite a strong domestic market
For Indian investors, this principle is just as relevant for country diversification as it is for asset diversification. While investing in India alone can yield strong returns driven by a robust economy, expanding into global markets offers unique benefits that domestic equities alone would not be able to offer.
