Mint Quick Edit | The World Cup is home after 17 years
Indian cricket team members received a grand felicitation on their return from Barbados as they first met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday in New Delhi and then joined a victory parade in Mumbai where large street-side crowds cheered for the T20 World Cup winners as they passed atop an open bus in a procession. The welcome was fitting, given that this title win is only the second for India and ended a 17-year drought in this format of the game, one that has lasted since India’s win in the inaugural edition of the championship in 2007.

Poor middle class is getting taxed more: The gold standard demands 10% tax slab to start from Rs 10 lakh today
income tax on the middle class — the most honest taxpaying group? The intention behind collecting income tax is noble as it helps in wealth redistribution and contributes to the growth of the economy. And, the Indian middle class is one of the most prominent groups that contribute to the nation's revenue through income tax. However, the process fails to live up to its intended goal when it starts taxing people with relatively lower income. Money loses its value with time due to inflation. So if tax slabs are not increased with time, it would mean people are paying income tax on lower real income. This has become an issue worth serious consideration today. According to budget 2014, an income tax rate of 20% became applicable on income above Rs 5 lakh and 30% on income above Rs 10 lakh. This has not changed in the last 10 years. If we take average inflation to be 6%, the real value of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh of 2014 would now be Rs 2.8 lakh and Rs 5.6 lakh, respectively.

Budget needs to think about farmers to help India get to developed economy goal
Union Budget 2024: Share of agriculture in India’s economy has declined over a period of time to less than 15% mainly due to high growth rate of the industry and services sectors. However, agriculture sector’s importance in India’s economy goes well beyond this mainly because more than 70% of India’s population depends on rural incomes and about 70% of poor people are found in rural areas.

Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism aims for fair trade, global decarbonisation: EU official
Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism aims to treat imported goods the same as EU-produced goods to help global decarbonisation, the Director-General of the European Commission has said following a visit to India to discuss tax and custom issues. Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is the European Union's planned tax on the carbon emitted while making goods imported from countries like India and China. The move has sparked a debate at multilateral forums, including the United Nations climate conferences, as the poorer countries fear such tariffs will harm livelihoods and economic growth. Director-General of the European Commission, Gerassimos Thomas, led a group of officials to New Delhi to discuss tax and customs issues, with a focus on CBAM, on July 1 and 2. He met the Indian government officials and business leaders to explore the manner in which it might affect the Indian industries and explain CBAM's goals and timeline. Thomas welcomed India's plans to decarbonise its economy, underlining the shared commitment to collaborate with India in their decarbonisation efforts, the European Commission said in a statement.

UK PM Keir Starmer says economy is 'in a bad state'
Keir Starmer described the British economy as «in a bad state» on Monday, saying his new government would make the decisions needed to bring about change. «The economy is in a bad state, I think the whole country knows that. That's why there was such a strong mandate for the incoming Labour government for change,» Starmer, who led his party to a landslide election win last week, said. «What we now have to do is to get on and deliver that change.»

Charting the global economy: UK labour party wins in landslide
Any euphoria over the size of its win, though, will be quickly overshadowed by the scale of the economic challenges facing the next government. Among economic data this week, inflation cooled last month in the euro zone, the US labor market showed further signs of moderating and Japan’s household spending retreated.

‘Many states’ decisions to encourage clean transportation about to be implemented’
Mint. Bhargava said incentivizing EVs is good, but only incentivizing EVs alone will slow down our “national carbon reduction goals".He added that the dominance of petrol and diesel vehicles has to be reduced in favour of vehicles with alternative fuels which offer lower emissions. He expressed that the Uttar Pradesh government's directive to waive road tax on hybrid cars would negatively impact the sales of petrol and diesel cars.
