20% monsoon deficit adds to India's sweltering heatwave troubles
India's monsoon has delivered 20 per cent less rain than normal this season, according to the weather department. This shortfall raises concerns for the country's critical agricultural sector, which relies heavily on monsoon rains. News agency Reuters reported that as per the Indian Meteorological Department, India has received 20 per cent less rainfall than normal since June 1. Almost all regions except for a few southern states have seen shortfalls and some northwestern states experiencing heat waves, the report said. «The monsoon's progress is stalled. It has weakened. But when it revives and becomes active, it can erase the rain deficit in a short burst,» an IMD official told Reuters.

Reset GST to make it a 'good and simple tax'
₹2 trillion, although the interim budget for 2024-25 had a relatively modest projection, we have the fiscal space to rid this levy of its complexity and go for simplified stability. While GST slabs need a reset, we must also widen its coverage to include fuel, liquor and other stuff left out for later consideration. Since states with heavy local levies on these items had feared it would hollow out their coffers, a consensus on this is a challenge.

Opinion: Time to stop complaining about the capital gains hike and get back to work
It would seem bizarre that anyone would welcome new taxes, especially those that have to pay them. And I am guessing I am in the top one per cent of Canadian taxpayers. So, is what you are about to read an endorsement of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s increase in the capital gains tax? Yes and no. The “no” is easy: We are all against new taxes. But it’s not that simple. And that’s the problem — no one is attempting to provide the whole picture, the understanding of which would help assess the merits of this particular tax initiative.

India's employment challenge: 20 million jobs need to be created each year
A number of analysts attribute the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) underperformance in the general election to voter unhappiness with the Narendra Modi government over unemployment, job reservations and farmer livelihoods. The Agnipath scheme of military recruitment came in for criticism during the election campaign and many political commentators expect that the new government will be compelled to make changes to it. We should view interpretations of election results with some scepticism, but it does appear that the issue of inadequate employment opportunities has bubbled up to the surface of our political ocean.
