NCP on Sunday released yet another list of 9 candidates for the Maharashtra elections, bringing its tally to 76 seats. The nominated candidates include Fahad Ahmad, husband of actress Swara Bhasker.

Jamshedpur East has been a BJP's stronghold since Bihar days and barring 2019, the party has never lost any election here since 1990 when it was part of Bihar. Former Jharkhand CM Raghubar Das won this seat five times, once in Bihar and four times since Jharkhand became a state, before losing it to Saryu Roy in 2019. Das is currently the governor of Odisha and BJP has fielded his daughter-in-law Purnima Das Sahu from his home turf. The election will decide whether Das's family still has a sway over the seat which has been his family seat for the last three decades. Congress has fielded former Jamshedpur MP Ajoy Kumar from the seat. There is also a rebellion within the BJP as party leader Shiv Shankar Singh has filed nomination as an Independent. Singh was hoping to get the ticket but with the party preferring Sahu over him, he has become a challenger. «People are regretting for defeating Ragubhar Das from this seat in the last election. This is a strong BJP seat and Purnima Sahu is going to win this seat easily,» Pradeep Gupta, a trader in Meharda area tells ET. The constituency has a sizable business community vote and BJP banks on their support for victory.

Vav assembly seat scheduled for November 13, it has turned into a de-facto battle of prestige for the Opposition Congress that has fielded Gulabsinh Rajput, a close confidant of Geniben Thakor, the lone Congress member of Lok Sabha from Gujarat. With AAP finally relenting from the contest after initial postering, the electoral battle is now clearly bipolar with BJP fielding Swarupji Thakor at the last minute. The Vav assembly segment in Banaskantha has a maximum population of Thakor voters at 70,000 followed by Chaudhary and Kshatriya voters. While the seat also has significant Dalit, Brahmin and Muslim voters, it is the Thakor and Chaudhary voters who play a decisive role in the outcome. The Congress high command refrained from fielding a Thakor candidate after fielding Geniben in the Lok Sabha and rewarded Gulabsinh, a Kshatriya candidate who had played a crucial role in Geniben's Lok Sabha campaign. Rajput is also a very popular leader in the region in his own right. However, he had lost to Shankar Chaudhary, Speaker of Gujarat legislative assembly from nearby Tharad constituency in 2022, Thakor had lost to Geniben in Vav in last assembly polls.

Senior BJP leaders are camping in the state, keeping a close watch on the day-to-day campaigns. Shiv Sena on Sunday released the second list of candidates for the upcoming state elections in Maharashtra, scheduled for November 20. The Shinde faction has fielded former Congress LS MP and currently Shiv Sena RS MP Milind Deora from Worli assembly seat against sitting MLA Aaditya Thackeray of the Shiv Sena (UBT). Another big name to feature in the list is Sanjay Nirupam who bagged a ticket for Dindoshi seat. The Maharashtra Assembly elections are scheduled for November 20, with counting for all 288 constituencies set for November 23. In the 2019 assembly elections, the BJP won 105 seats, the Shiv Sena 56, and the Congress 44. In 2014, the BJP secured 122 seats, the Shiv Sena 63, and the Congress 42.

Ishiba, 67, called Sunday's election only days after taking office on October 1, aiming to bolster his position and that of his scandal-hit Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has governed Japan almost constantly for seven decades. But national broadcaster NHK and other media outlets predicted in the hours after polls closed that the LDP — in the party's worst result since 2009 — together with its long-term junior coalition party Komeito had fallen short of the 233 seats needed for a majority in Japan's lower house.

AAP government «honestly» served the people of Delhi for 10 years, doing a lot of the work that no other dispensation in the country had done, party chief Arvind Kejriwal said on Sunday. The former Delhi chief minister, who was taking part in a 'padyatra (foot march)' campaign ahead of the assembly polls, also asked the public not to vote for the BJP. He claimed that the saffron party, if it assumed power in Delhi, would stop the city government's free schemes for electricity, health care, education and bus rides for women. Kejriwal also promised that he would waive «inflated» water bills, urging the people to vote for AAP and help him become chief minister again.

Mithun Chakraborty on Sunday asserted that the «masnad» (throne) of West Bengal will be of BJP after the 2026 assembly elections in the state, promising to do whatever it takes to achieve the goal. Chakraborty, who has received India's highest film honour Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year, was felicitated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the inauguration of a membership drive of the BJP in West Bengal. Speaking at the programme at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC) here, Chakraborty said, «In 2026, the masnad will be ours and we will do everything to achieve the goal.» Stating that he had campaigned for the party for 37 days in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the former Rajya Sabha member said that he was pained at the results in which BJP had come down from 18 seats in 2019 to 12 out of 42 constituencies in West Bengal.

Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, will spend Sunday in Philadelphia, attending church services in the morning and visiting a barbershop. The vice president also plans to stop at a Puerto Rican restaurant and a youth basketball facility, as per an AP report. On Monday, Walz, the Minnesota's governor who is Harris' running mate, will campaign in Manitowoc and Waukesha, Wisconsin, before a joining Harris for a rally in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where the singer Maggie Rogers is scheduled to perform.

Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday that Jharkhand is a «tough state» in terms of BJP's prospect in the upcoming assembly elections there but the saffron camp is «hopeful» of coming to power. Sarma, who is the party's co-in charge for the poll-bound Jharkhand, also said he has been busy campaigning there and is not able to focus on the November 13 by-polls in Assam. «I have not been keeping tabs on the bypolls here. I have been very busy with Jharkhand,» the chief minister said, addressing a press conference here.
