Lost opportunity for Tata car plant at Singur continues to dominate poll narrative in Hooghly
industrialisation still remains a key issue in the Hooghly Lok Sabha constituency where two cine stars, contesting on TMC and BJP tickets, pledge to revive industry in the region. Hooghly district, home to Singur area, rose to national prominence in 2006-2007 due to the anti-land acquisition movement against the erstwhile Left Front government that eventually caused the regime's downfall, catapulting agitating TMC to power in the state. But even after 16 years, the issue of the lost opportunity of industrialisation continues to dominate poll narratives of all parties in the fray. TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee has fielded political greenhorn Rachana Banerjee, the charismatic host of the long-running hit TV show 'Didi No 1', to challenge the incumbent MP and noted actor Locket Chatterjee, representing the BJP.

Sandeshkhali arms recovery: Will Mamata Banerjee win polls by threatening people, asks Nadda
BJP president J P Nadda on Sunday asked if West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wants to win the Lok Sabha elections by scaring and threatening people as he hit out at her government over the seizure of arms and ammunition by the CBI in Sandeshkhali. In a statement, he expressed confidence that the BJP will win over 35 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state and conveyed his party's solidarity with the Sandeshkhali women who were allegedly sexually assaulted by former Trinamool Congress strongman Shahjahan Sheikh and his associates. Sheikh, now suspended from the TMC, is in Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody and is also accused of land grab by locals. The CBI on Friday seized arms and ammunition, including a police service revolver and foreign-made firearms, during searches at two premises of an associate of Sheikh.

Why Nifty Bank has underperformed Nifty50 in the past one year
Nifty Bank index has given only 12.41% returns compared to 25.89% returns by the Nifty 50 index. Beneath this underperformance lies a story. Let us explore it in detail: Investors preferred public sector banks (BPSUs) to private sector banks. BPSUs largely finance institutional and corporate borrowers and private sector banks are known for catering retail credit needs. Despite strong credit offtake, stocks of private sector banks did not do well. There is a reason. Private sector banks were richly valued compared to BPSUs. In a high interest rate regime, value conscious investors preferred to stick to BPSU. The PSU rally also improved the sentiment around PSU bank stocks. However, these stocks have a relatively low weight (around 15%) in the Nifty Bank index. Hence the positive impact on Nifty Bank Index was not as much.

Use the dips to buy into Kotak Bank and Bajaj Finance; recovery will be as sharp on next trigger: Deven Choksey
Deven Choksey, MD, DRChoksey FinServ Pvt. Ltd, says “I feel that the current market is giving an opportunity during the corrections and these corrections come on a stock-specific basis. These corrections do not come on an overall market basis. So, if Kotak Bank or Bajaj Finance is down, that becomes a buy opportunity for investors to buy into the portfolio largely because when the next trigger comes in, the recovery would be equally sharp of 20-25% and that is where contra-buy has to take place.”

Congress' Delhi president Arvinder Singh Lovely resigned from the post citing discomfort with party's decision to ally with the Aam Aadmi Party for the upcoming elections, as per a letter quoted by ANI. «The Delhi Congress Unit was against an alliance with a Party which was formed on the sole basis of leveling false, fabricated and malafide corruption charges against the Congress Party. Despite that, the Party made a decision to ally with the AAP in Delhi...,» Lovely said in a letter. «Not only did I publicly back the decision, I also ensured that the full State Unit fell in line with the High Command's final order. On instructions from AICC General Security, I even went to the extent of visiting Arvind Kejriwal's resident on the night of his arrest along with Subhash Chopra, Sandeep Dikshit, despite the same being against my position on the matter,» Lovely said.
