Lok Sabha elections: Delhi Police tightens security in border areas
Delhi Police has intensified checking at the national capital's borders to prevent the illegal supply of liquor and the movement of unaccounted for cash after the Model Code of Conduct for the Lok Sabha elections came into effect, officials said on Wednesday. Police in the border areas have been directed to keep an eye on the movement of suspicious vehicles, a senior officer said. The Election Commission on Saturday announced several strategies to deal with the four-fold challenge of the 4Ms — «muscle, money, misinformation and Model Code (of Conduct) violations». In one of the first actions, the Delhi Police on Tuesday arrested a man identified as Ajay (22), a resident of Haryana's Sonipat, for allegedly illegally transporting 20 cartons of liquor. The vehicle used to carry the liquor and two number plates were also seized.

Centre defends dropping CJI from selection panel, says EC's independence doesn't stem from judicial member's presence
Supreme Court the appointment of two new election commissioners (ECs) under a 2023 law that excludes the Chief Justice of India from the selection committee, saying the independence of the Election Commission does not arise from the presence of a judicial member on the committee. In an affidavit filed in the apex court, the Union Law Ministry rejected the petitioner's claim that the two election commissioners were hastily appointed on March 14 to «pre-empt» the orders of the top court the next day, when the matters challenging the 2023 law were listed for hearing on interim relief. The affidavit has been filed in response to a batch of pleas, including those by Congress leader Jaya Thakur and the Association for Democratic Reforms, challenging the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Terms of Office) Act, 2023. «It is submitted that the case of the petitioners is premised on one fundamental fallacy that the independence can only be maintained in any authority when the selection committee is of a particular formulation. It must be noted that the independence of the Election commission, or any other organisation or authority, does not arise from and is not attributable to the presence of a judicial member in the selection committee,» the affidavit said.

Lok Sabha Election: What is powering BJP's South India juggernaut? A look at four states
BJP. The BJP's southern push is part of its larger plan to emerge as a pan-India party. But there are short-term considerations too. The party's target of winning 370 seats when it has maxed out in its traditional stronghold states can be realised only by winning more seats in the South. Additionally, it is expecting strong resistance from opposition parties in Maharashtra and Bihar and also its South Indian bastion of Karnataka, where its NDA coalition won 26 out of 28 seats in 2019 polls. Its new chief ministers in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are untested which could be a vulnerability. For these reasons, the BJP has crafted a major campaign for South India led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has visited South India nearly two dozen times in the past few months. Modi on Tuesday wrapped up his whirlwind tour of South India by holding a roadshow in Kerala and a public rally in Tamil Nadu

Baar-Baar launch karna padta hai: PM Modi takes a dig at Rahul Gandhi
Startup Mahakumbh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi likened the spirit of entrepreneurship to the realm of politics. Emphasizing the essence of innovation and resilience, he underscored the disparity between traditional political ventures and the dynamic nature of startups. «Many people try to 'launch' startups, especially in politics, sometimes multiple times… The difference between you and them is that you're experimental. You try new ideas after the failure of one launch,» PM Modi said without taking any name. The dig was apparently made on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi's recent endeavors, including the Bharat Jodo Yatra and the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, are perceived as strategic moves to rebrand himself and assert his leadership within the Congress party, particularly in the lead-up to the forthcoming General elections. Notably, Gandhi is poised to contest again from his current constituency, Wayanad.
