Short of skilled hands, companies turn to apprentices
shortage of skilled labour in the frontline or blue-collar workforce has prompted companies across sectors such as industrial/manufacturing, electrical/electronics, NBFCs, retail, ecommerce and FMCG to hire more hands with class X/XII qualifications, and then train the apprentices in specific skill sets to make them «jobs-ready». This is leading to an all-time high demand for apprentices, as per a study by TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, shared exclusively with ET. The net apprenticeship outlook — or the willingness among employers to engage apprentices — for H2 (Oct-Mar) has soared to record high with 75% of the organisations planning to onboard apprentices versus 41% in the same period in 2021.

Beauty, lifestyle, electronics top-selling categories this Diwali: Report
The other top categories that topped sales were lifestyle and electronics during the recent festive shopping season. Mobile phones, adaptors, and earpods were the top-selling products in the electronics category with brands like Redmi, OnePlus and Boat taking the lead, according to the report. The report noted that 47% sales of beauty products were contributed by consumers in the 18-24 year age group. The report further flagged healthcare and nutrition as categories with greater awareness and demand, underscoring the competition among brands vying for limited space within marketplaces. Somdutta Singh, founder and chief executive at Assiduus Global Inc, said in a statement: “Embracing online shopping as the new norm, the Indian e-commerce sector is poised for remarkable expansion.” He said the surge was led by Gen Z and millennial consumers, indicating that the digitally savvy generation is dominating the online shopping space in India.

Bharti Airtel’s selling and distribution costs to be four times Jio’s this fiscal
Bharti Airtel’s selling and distribution (S&D) costs are nearly four times higher than Reliance Jio’s as the Sunil Mittal-led telecom operator’s premium branding and pricing strategy are vital for acquiring and retaining high-value customers as well as sustaining its 12% higher average revenue per user (ARPU) than the telecom market leader, said analysts. As per company data and CLSA estimates, Bharti Airtel’s S&D expenses are 8% of revenue compared to Jio’s 2%. The global brokerage estimates Bharti Airtel’s S&D and associated costs will hit Rs 15,200 crore in 2023-24, four times higher than Jio’s estimated Rs 3,800 crore. “Bharti’s higher S&D spend and branding efforts are key as its premium branding helps sustain premium ARPU and improve market share,” CLSA said. This, it said, is because India’s second-largest telco follows a unified strategy for all its services under the Airtel flagship brand, which has resulted in quality advantages.

Faster security checks at Indian airports soon. How it works
Currently, passengers have to remove items such as electronic items and liquid from hand luggage and put them on trays for security checks. Once implemented, the 3D CTX machines will reduce the time taken for security checks at airports. Passengers wont need to take out electronic devices like laptops or chargers and liquids and put them on trays at security checkpoints. Airports will also have to reconfigure the layouts at airports as CTX machines are larger than the 2D X-ray scanners in use currently. Besides passenger convenience, CTX machines will also improve detection of prohibited items. London City Airport in April this year, according to a BBC report, allowed electronics to be kept in hand luggage at security after installation of the CTX machines. The UK government has set a June 2024 deadline for most UK airports to install the machines. “CTX will not only improve passenger experience at airports by speeding up PESC process, but also improve detection of prohibited items and make security more robust. This will enhance the capability of detecting non-metallic threat objects like liquid, gel or plastic contraband,” TOI had reported citing sources .

Outlook on EMS sector: Avalon & Kaynes could give 20-40% return in 2024
global megatrends in 5G, data centers, electronic vehicles, healthcare, artificial intelligence, and Industry 4.0. Three EMS players namely Kaynes, Avalon, and VVDN entered into Transfer of Technology (ToT) licensing with the Central government for the development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) for developing ‘high performing computing servers (HPC)’. The supply chain has still not come up in India and EMS players are dependent on component imports. The government has recently given approvals for defence acquisitions/procurements amounting to ~INR78b. In the long term, combined revenue for the MOSL EMS coverage basket is poised to register a 38% CAGR over FY23-26E, aided by an improvement in high-value product mix (box builds) and increasing order flows from high-margin industries such as A&D, Clean Energies, Industrials, etc. Consequently, combined EBITDA margin is likely to expand by a few basis points more to reach ~14.0% by FY26, with EBITDA CAGR of ~40% to reach INR19.8b over FY23-26 from INR7.3b only in FY23 The Jul-Sep quarter is a seasonally weak period for the EMS industry.
