How India's toy industry beat China with high tariffs and quality checks – can it go further?
Priced at half that of their imported counterparts, the Indian toy doesn’t just match but “rivals the foreign brands feature-for-feature”, exclaim the Shettys. The kids, who got to add to their treasure trove of mostly imported dart blasters, are happy too. That is the sweet spot that India’s reviving toy industry has captured, and in a rather quick time too. In just four years, India has cut toy imports from China, a nation that has long dominated the global market, by an impressive 80%. A mix of high tariffs and stringent quality checks helped. Between FY20 and FY24, India sharply increased customs duty — from 20% to 70%. It also enforced the Quality Control Order (QCO), a regulation mandating stringent safety standards for all toys, whether domestically produced or imported. Result: In FY20, India had imported Chinese toys worth $235 million, a figure that plunged to just $41 million by FY24. It has also evolved into a net exporter of toys.

Construct EVM temple: Sanjay Raut takes dig at Mahayuti
Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Sanjay Raut on Saturday took a dig at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra, saying that they should take out a procession of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and take the decision to construct an EVM temple. He said that during the first cabinet meeting, they should announce the construction of an EVM temple in front of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur. First of all, the procession of the Chief Minister will be taken out there (in Nagpur). I think that before taking out the procession of the CM, they should take out a procession of EVMs and in the first cabinet they should make a decision to construct a temple of EVMs in front of RSS Headquarters," Raut said in a press conference here.

Be selective in PSUs, cement; gung-ho on 3 steel stocks: Hemang Jani
Hemang Jani, Independent Market Expert, says among PSUs, Bharat Electronics and HAL have reported strong financial results, making them attractive investment options, along with select power companies like NTPC, especially after its recent demerger and the launch of the NTPC Green IPO, showcasing its renewable energy potential. While one can remain optimistic, a discerning approach is crucial when evaluating public sector undertakings. Investors should target niche, selective companies in this sector. Among steel stocks, Jani holds Tata Steel in high regard, but believes certain pallet players like Godawari Power are better positioned due to improving spreads. Additionally, Jindal Steel & Power's efficient captive unit for raw materials may offer a more attractive investment opportunity. From the end of last year till middle of this year, the PSU sector, be it defence, railways, infra or power names – had been the most buzzing segment. But that rally had fizzled out in the latter half of this year. What is your take on PSUs. A lot of people are hoping that there will be a rebound in the government spending come H2 of FY25 and PSUs will revive? Hemang Jani: Yes, some of these companies which have corrected quite sharply in the past two months are showing a good rebound and it is not just the stock price rebound.

As BJP govt in MP completes 1 year in office, CM Yadav launches two programmes
Mohan Yadav on Wednesday launched two programmes to highlight development works of his administration and link more eligible people with welfare schemes. "Jankalyan Parv" (public welfare festival) and "Mukhyamantri Jankalyan Abhiyan" (public welfare campaign) will run on different dates through December-January. «It is a happy coincidence that today, on the occasion of International Gita Jayanti, Jankalyan Parv and Mukhyamantri Jankalyan Abhiyan are being launched. The three-time MLA, who was elected the BJP legislature party leader on December 11, 2023, and took oath as CM two days later, was speaking at a function organized at the Motilal Nehru stadium in the state capital Bhopal. During the Jankalyan Abhiyan, which will run from December 11 to January 26, people from poor families, youths, farmers and women, who are eligible to avail benefits of various welfare schemes, will be identified through a survey and linked with these plans, Yadav informed.
