Your letter 'factually incorrect' to 'cover up delays' in setting up of FTSCs for rape cases: Center to Mamata Banjeree
Mamata Banerjee's leter on August 29 is factually incorrect and is a step to cover up delays in setting up fast track special courts for rape cases. In a letter dated August 30, Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, said that West Bengal has established 88 Fast Track Courts (FTCs), which are not the same as the Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) covered under the Central Government Scheme. «The FTCs are set up and funded by the State Governments in consultation with the concerned High Courts to handle a broad spectrum of cases such as civil cases involving senior citizens, women, children, disabled persons, litigants affected by HIV-AIDS and other terminal illnesses; and civil disputes related to land acquisition and property/ rent disputes pending for over five years including cases of heinous crimes. In the FTCs in West Bengal, a total of 81,141 cases were pending as on 30.06.2024. On the other hand, Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) are specifically dedicated to deal with Rape and POCSO Act cases. lnspite of pendency of 48,600 rape and POCSO cases in West Bengal, the State has not operationalized additional 11 FTSCs which may be exclusive POCSO Courts or combined FTSCs dealing with both Rape and POCSO cases, as per the State's requirement,» she added.

Court revives Sarah Palin's libel lawsuit against The New York Times
federal appeals court revived Sarah Palin's libel case against The New York Times on Wednesday, citing errors by a lower court judge, particularly his decision to dismiss the lawsuit while a jury was deliberating. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan wrote that Judge Jed S. Rakoff's decision in February 2022 to dismiss the lawsuit mid-deliberations improperly intruded on the jury's work. It also found that the erroneous exclusion of evidence, an inaccurate jury instruction and an erroneous response to a question from the jury tainted the jury's decision to rule against Palin. It declined, however, to grant Palin's request to force Rakoff off the case on grounds he was biased against her. The 2nd Circuit said she had offered no proof.

Can you have too many custodians?
As custodians in the independent advisor market undergo mergers and consolidations, advisors can find it challenging to secure a stable home for their clients’ assets. Many advisors are opting to use multiple custodians to mitigate risk and increase efficiency, akin to diversification in investment portfolios.

President Droupadi Murmu asks media to be fearless, stand with truth
President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday asked the media to do fearless reporting and stand with the truth as she saw the fourth estate playing a big role in shaping the country and society. The president, who met PTI editors at Rashtrapati Bhavan on the occasion of the 77th anniversary of the founding of the news agency, said everyone has a responsibility in taking the country forward and it was important how the country is presented. «Media ko nirbhikta se kam karna chaiye (media should work fearlessly),» she commented. «Kabhi satya se hatna nahi chaiye (It should never deviate from the truth).» Murmu has also penned an exclusive article for PTI on the recent incidents of sexual and physical assaults on women, which have led to widespread agitations.

Kamala Harris can win the US Presidential elections on vibes — and Donald Trump knows it
Republicans who see Vice President Kamala Harris’ rise in the polls have a simple message for former President Donald Trump — stick to policy and you can win. The problem is their candidate is Donald Trump, and Trump, who beat policy wonk Hillary Clinton in 2016, knows that in a contest between white papers and vibes — which is really just cooler shorthand for emotion and feeling — vibes usually carry the day. (Clinton also famously lost to Barack Obama in 2008 in a contest not over minuscule policy differences but over vibes.) This exchange between the former president and South Carolina Senator and Trump superfan Lindsey Graham was telling: “President Trump can win this election. His policies are good for America, and if you have a policy debate for president, he wins.” Graham told Kristen Welker last week on NBC’s Meet the Press. “Donald Trump the provocateur, the showman, may not win this election.” (Trump, in a policy debate, LOL).

'Enough is enough': anguished President Murmu asks nation to wake up, end crimes against women
crimes against women and counter the mindset that sees women as «less powerful, less capable, less intelligent». «Those who share such views then go further and see the female as an object… We owe it to our daughters to remove the hurdles from their path of winning the freedom from fear,» Murmu said in an exclusive signed article for PTI. Referring to the August 9 rape and murder of a junior doctor in a Kolkata hospital, a «dismayed and horrified» president said what is even more depressing is that it is part of a series of crimes against women. Murmu said no civilised society can allow daughters and sisters to be subjected to such atrocities. «The nation is bound to be outraged, and so am I,» she wrote.
