Traders shy away from Modi-linked stocks in shift to defensives
Investors in India are shunning stocks that were expected to benefit from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s re-election, and instead piling into defensive sectors. An index of the so-called Modi stocks, a term coined by CLSA, has climbed only 2% as the prime minister completed his first 100 days in office after winning a third term in early June. In contrast, consumer and software stocks have rallied 20% and 34%, respectively.

Will ensure Vizag steel plant operations streamlined: AP CM Chandrababu Naidu
RINL) is struggling to tide over a financial crisis, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday said he would try his best to ensure that the state-owned steel plant is not privatised. Addressing a press conference here, he also cautioned the employees and trade unions of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant to implement proper management policies and bring it out of the woods. Noting that it was he who got the RINL's debt restructured and paved way for smooth functioning during former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's regime, Naidu blamed the previous YSR Congress government for not taking the plant's health seriously. «The union and employees ( of RINL) have a responsibility to ensure smooth flow of operations and turn the loss-making project into a profitable one. While steel plants in the private sector are making profits, the management should think why a government undertaking has to face such a situation,» he said.

US industrial production data jumps sharply in August
US industrial production surged in August as motor vehicle manufacturing bounced back after plummeting in July, the Federal Reserve said Tuesday, shortly before kicking off a two-day meeting on interest rates. Total industrial output exceeded expectations to rise by 0.8 percent last month from a revised 0.9 decline in July, the US central bank said in a statement, pinning much of the rise on «a recovery in the index of motor vehicles and parts.» The index «jumped nearly 10 percent in August after dropping roughly 9 percent in July,» it added. The July data was affected by the larger-than-expected impact of Hurricane Beryl.

We will not spare you: Nitin Gadkari fumes at poor upkeep of EPE, warns operators
Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday came down heavily on agencies and contractors over ill-maintained roads, saying good operators would be awarded but bad ones would be «driven out of the system». «We will not spare you. We'll ensure that bank guarantees of those doing bad work are forfeited and after this, we will blacklist you, not allow you to apply for new tenders,» the minister said. His warning came after he noticed the bad maintenance of the Eastern Peripheral Expressway that he took to reach Ghaziabad to inaugurate a tree plantation drive 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' under the 'Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 — Swabhav Swachhata — Sanskar Swachhata' campaign. During his address, the minister highlighted the strides in development made under the government, the ministry and the National Highway Authority of India, citing data, expenditures and the future vision for the sector.
