Double tax for NRIs if this form is not filed and foreign tax credit is not claimed
NRI) who has filed an income tax return (ITR) while claiming relief for income tax and double taxation, it's important to follow additional procedures. Failure to do so could lead to rejection of your claim by the tax department. If your claim for double taxation relief is rejected, you'll be impacted in two ways. First, you'll have to pay income tax according to the laws of the foreign country where you're a resident. Second, you'll also have to pay income tax in India. To save NRIs from this trouble, the Indian government has signed a Double Tax Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) with more than 90 countries including USA, the UK, Korea and Taiwan.

Goldman sees US GDP hit if Trump wins, boost if Democrats sweep
Goldman Sachs Group Inc. economists gamed out the potential economic implications of a Republican or Democratic victory in the November elections, cautioning that US GDP faces a hit in the case of a win for Donald Trump. “We estimate that if Trump wins in a sweep or with divided government, the hit to growth from tariffs and tighter immigration policy would outweigh the positive fiscal impulse” from maintaining most tax cuts, Goldman economists including Alec Phillips wrote in a note Tuesday. Gross domestic product would see a peak hit of 0.5 percentage point in the second half of next year in that scenario, with the effects abating in 2026, the Goldman team estimated. They assumed a 20 percentage-point hike in China tariffs under Trump, along with higher duties on auto imports from Mexico and the European Union, and a reduction in immigration that would slow growth in the labor force.

Shivaji statue collapse: Navy claims maintenance lapses by Maharashtra govt; Joint Committee formed for probe
Maharashtra government and Indian Navy trade charges over the collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's statue in Sindhudurg on August 26, defence sources told ET that a detailed maintenance schedule was shared with state authorities for its general upkeep. According to the sources, the Navy handed over the statue to the Maharashtra government in April, but it suspects that periodic checks were not carried out by the authorities. «As per initial assessment, rusting happened at the joints near nuts and bolts. Had the maintenance schedule shared by the Navy been followed by local authorities, rusting could have been fixed and the statue might not have collapsed,» a source told ET.

Danger for Trump: RFK Jr's name in ballot may affect ex-President in key states
US Presidential Elections 2024. Even though Kennedy is trying hard to get his name removed from the ballot, according to reports, he may still see his name feature in the Presidential Election ballots when the regions of Michigan, Wisconsin and North Carolina head to the US polls 2024. It is indeed tough to understand what adverse effects of this uncommon case may have on Donald Trump, but it may definitely see some votes going away from his side, probably of some who may have certain reservations on voting for him in the US Presidential Elections. AU Small Finance Bank submits application to RBI for voluntary transition to universal bank
AU Small Finance Bank has formally made an application to the Reserve Bank of India for voluntary transition to universal bank, the bank announced Tuesday. «We wish to inform (you) that the bank has submitted an application to the Reserve Bank of India to seek approval for voluntary transition from a small finance bank to universal bank on September 03, 2024,» the bank said in a regulatory filing to the stock exchanges. Transition to universal banks would mean that AU would have to follow easier regulatory norms in certain aspects — its capital adequacy requirement would come down to around 11.5% (including capital conservation buffer) from 15%, the priority sector lending norm would be lower at 40% instead of 75%, and the stipulation of having at least 50% of loan portfolio in loans less than Rs 25 lakh would no longer exist.

Cochin Shipyard, HAL, 8 other defence PSU stocks fall up to 30% in a month. Is it time for bottom fishing?
Defence stocks have corrected by up to 30% in the past one month as investors look to book profits after multibagger rallies over the past one-and-half years. As a strategy, investors should stay away from bottom fishing at this time and the decision to invest in this sector should come only when the signs of reversal become apparent, experts recommend. In the Nifty Defence index, six stocks have seen their price erode in double digits with Cochin Shipyard remaining the top loser in the pack falling by 30% in the last one month. It is followed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders which have declined by 26% and 21%, respectively in the same period.
