Horror show on Dalal Street as US, Japan spook investors
₹15.4 trillion. Domestic institutions stepped up to counter sales by foreign investors; however, profit-taking by investors who route money directly into markets worsened Monday's fall. How retail investors behave from now—through mutual funds and direct investments—will be key to ascertaining whether Indian markets can outperform global peers, market experts said.

Yen yorker: What is the 'yen carry trade’ that’s causing a global stock rout?
Mint looks at the reasons behind the global ‘stockocalypse’: Global markets were in a sea of red, led by Japan, where the benchmark Nikkei tumbled 12.40%, marking its largest one-day fall since ‘Black Monday’ in October 1987. The broader Topix index crashed 12.48%. Such was the intensity of the selloff that circuit breakers temporarily halted trading of futures for the Topix as well as the Nikkei 225.

Vehicle registrations rise 13.84% in July driven by rural demand, discounts
Dispatches of passenger vehicles last month, though, declined by about 2% with automakers limiting wholesales amid elevated stock levels in the market. As per industry estimates inventory of passenger vehicles in the channel stands at 407,000 units. Dealers peg the numbers higher and said car stocks in the network range between 67-72 days. Auto retailers body FADA (Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations), however, expect good retails in the upcoming festive season. Challenges though remain due to high stocks in the passenger vehicle segment, weak consumer sentiments in certain areas stemming from economic uncertainties and uneven spread of the monsoons.

Illegality shouldn't be condoned, but affected people priority: Tharoor on Wayanad landslides
Wayanad disaster, but right now, the affected people battling psychological trauma require attention and sympathy, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said on Monday. Tharoor was responding to Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav's remarks that the Kerala government allowed «illegal human habitat expansion and mining» in the state's fragile region which resulted in the devastating landslides in Wayanad district. «If there has been any illegality that certainly should not be condoned and action should be taken. On that, I think we are all in (of) the same view that illegality is not something anybody welcomes. And I am sure the committee should do a professional job and make the decisions it needs to make,» Tharoor told PTI Video.

Not buying gold or silver now; waiting for a better chance: Jim Rogers
Jim Rogers, Commodity Expert, says he has already sold most of his shares everywhere in the world. In a few places, he still has shares. So, he does not have anything that he wants to sell now because he has a lot of cash in US dollars right now. But he says he has not sold short. But if he ever starts selling short, he will sell seven or eight stocks in the US that have been so very hot. But he will not sell India short. He would rather sell the US short. Rogers also says when markets go down, everything goes down including gold and silver. Rogers owns gold and silver but he is not buying now. He is waiting for a better chance. While looking at the markets, everybody is saying that, oh, my God, have financial markets turned? Are we staring at what could be called a directional turn for financial markets or this is like a one-day sell-off or a one-week sell-off which would be digested? Jim Rogers: The US market has not had a problem since 2008, 2009, that is the longest in American history. So, America and therefore, the world is long overdue for a problem. And I will say to you, I have a lot of cash. The reason I have a lot of cash is that I expect the next sell-off to be the worst in my lifetime because the debt has gone up by so very much everywhere. Even India has debt now. So, you should be worried. I am worried. I am waiting for this collapse to come because I know it is going to be very, very bad. Maybe it is here. I do not know.

Sebi's reforms to aid further retail participation in markets, say experts
MUMBAI : The Securities and Exchange Board of India's (Sebi's) series of initiatives, such as quicker transaction settlements and shorter listing timelines for public issues, have enhanced transparency and will aid greater participation in the capital markets, say experts. Regulatory reforms and innovations have brought investors an annual benefit of ₹900 crore, and the full adoption of certain other initiatives could potentially add ₹3,000 crore more through freed-up capital, according to a 30 July report by NSE Data and Analytics, a unit of National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. The Indian Capital Markets: Transformative shifts achieved through technology and reforms report highlighted the substantial growth of Indian capital markets, which have outpaced the global average in market capitalization.

China plans to adopt volume-based emissions reduction targets
With its population of 1.4 billion and a massive manufacturing industry, China is by far the world's largest emitter of the greenhouse gases that scientists say drive climate change and make extreme weather more frequent and intense. Until now the country had set itself climate targets based on the carbon intensity of its economic growth, meaning it set objectives to reduce its emissions per unit of wealth produced.

There's a China connection to why eSIMs haven't taken off in India
iPhone was stolen in the bustling Chandni Chowk market in Delhi, he smirked and told his friends to remain calm. The police were able to track the device within 30 minutes as it had an embedded SIM (eSIM) which cannot be physically removed from the phone unlike a normal SIM Card. An eSIM can be tracked even when a phone is switched off. In another instance, an oil refinery in Assam was able to fix leakages and prevent accidents within a few seconds as several Internet of Things (IoT) devices with eSIMs sent live alerts to a centralised provisioning system. Virtual SIMs or eSIMs offer several advantages to retail and enterprise phone users. However, the pace of adoption in India has been sluggish so far, mainly due to a Chinese government policy, executives and experts said.

The Godfather neutralised, but malware mafia alive and kicking
malicious domains and phishing campaigns, in the aftermath of the global outage triggered by faulty software from CrowdStrike in July, are still actively pretending to seek feedback from impacted companies, cybersecurity experts said. Cybercriminals were quick to exploit the chaos caused by the CrowdStrike crisis and send remote access or data wiper malware through phishing emails, which are then used as a ransom tactic. Nearly 37,000 employees of top 350 global organisations have fallen prey to these phishing campaigns — termed as ‘Reap Blue Screen’ — and given away sensitive details, according to data from cybersecurity firm Cyfirma.

Infosys vs USD 4 Billion GST: CBIC sensitises officials about June circular as tax experts bat for clarity
Central Board of Indirect taxes and Customs has asked field officials to take into account its June 26 circular when considering matters about related party import of services by local entities, people familiar with the development said. The move could provide relief to Infosys and other tech companies facing the threat of massive goods and services tax (GST) demands. As per the circular, if a related domestic entity has not issued an invoice for a service provided by its foreign affiliate, the cost of such services is deemed to be nil. Such services would, therefore, not attract any GST. On July 30, Bengaluru-headquartered tech firm Infosys received a Rs 32,403 crore pre-show cause notice from the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) for “non-payment of Integrated GST on import of services” from its foreign branches for the period July 2017, when GST was rolled out, to the FY22.

Market mayhem: From US to Japan, why stock markets are tanking?
US economy, corporate world and Federal Reserve. Some stock market watchers believe it is a kind of reset as the Dow slipped more than 600 points, indicating a new phase in the US economy- a slowdown. Besides, the S&P 500 fell 1.5% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite also tumbled by 2.5%. The downslide was so clear and widespread that Dow futures slipped 400 points or 0.1%, S&P 500 futures fell 1.2% and Nasdaq futures came down 1.8%. As if this is not enough, some experts apprehend further bloodbath on Friday as Amazon and Intel have already reported a fall in their earnings, reports CNN Business. They have also indicated that the transition to AI has proven costly, though its prospects remain uncertain.
