There are a few reasons for our habit. Most of us avoid boredom if we can, Byers explained, and multitasking is a reliable way to ward it off.

ISIS-K, group tied to Moscow attack, has grown bolder and more violent
Taliban what a relentless foe the Islamic State's affiliate in Afghanistan can be. Much of the West considers the Taliban, which reclaimed power in the country in 2021, to be an extremist Islamic movement. But the Islamic State-Khorasan, the affiliate that took responsibility for a terrorist attack in suburban Moscow on Friday, has slammed the Taliban government, calling the group's version of Islamic rule insufficiently hard-line. The Islamic State-Khorasan, or ISIS-K, is one of the last significant antagonists that the Taliban face in Afghanistan. It has carried out a bloody drumbeat of attacks throughout the country in recent years, seeking to use the violence to undermine the Taliban's relationships with regional allies and to portray the government as incapable of providing security in Afghanistan, experts say.

India Inc becomes fertile ground for family-planning perks
infertility rates, fertility benefits in Indian companies have gone from a novelty to a much-sought-after workplace perk. Companies including Bizongo, HSBC India, Titan Company, Navi, Meesho, and Simpl are among those that have rolled out or enhanced fertility benefits as part of their corporate insurance and benefits programmes as they focus on creating more inclusive and supportive workplaces. Experts say such measures not only help companies attract and retain talent, but also boost their diversity credentials. For women employees in particular, such benefits matter a lot — a recent survey by employee insurance platform Plum showed one in 3 women are open to egg freezing; 88% of them want it to be included in their workplace benefits package.

Arbitration preferred over litigation: Survey
Arbitration is the preferred method of dispute resolution over litigation in the country because of the speed of resolution, confidentiality and cost effectiveness but there is still scope for improvement, a survey has found. Conducted by law firm Khaitan & Co, the survey, which focused on the experience of parties rather than advocates and experts involved in domestic arbitration in the country, asserted that most arbitrations take 24 to 36 months to complete while a majority wanted the exercise to be over within 12 months. According to a press release, a large majority of those covered under the survey 'Current Trends in Domestic Arbitration in India', said they intended to use domestic arbitration in the future for both small and large disputes. «Arbitration is the preferred method of dispute resolution over litigation because of the speed of resolution, confidentiality, cost effectiveness, and process with speed of resolution being the most important. Most arbitrations are taking 24 to 36 months to complete instead of 12 months, which is what parties expect,» according to the findings shared in the release.

Buying property in Australia? Here are income tax compliance you should know before you purchase
I am planning to buy a residential property from a person who is a resident of Australia for ₹75 lakh. I understand that since the sale consideration exceeds 50 lakhs I have to deduct tax at 1% of the sale consideration. Is my understanding correct? What are the other formalities that I need to comply with while deducting tax at source? The provision of Section 194IA requires a buyer of immovable property, other than agricultural land, to deduct tax at source @ 1% of the sale consideration if the sale consideration exceeds fifty lakh rupees.

'New income tax regime is yet to have any meaningful impact on ELSS schemes': AMC Expert
Edited Excerpts of an interview with Livemint 1) How do you assess the current domestic and global market conditions, and what factors are you closely monitoring? Inflation and geopolitical tension are the main factors impacting the global economy at present. US inflation, still hovering above the 3% level is proving to be stickier and more persistent, hence rates are likely to remain higher for the time being and any cut is unlikely in 1HCY24. To add to the concerns, the Red Sea attack by the Houthis added to higher freight rates across the globe.
