UK PM Sunak gambles on return of Cameron to win over moderate voters
David Cameron's return to government, but his appointment is one that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hopes will signal to wavering supporters that the Conservatives are not lurching to the right to win an election expected next year. As well as firing his interior minister, Suella Braverman, after she published an unauthorised article criticising the police's handling of protests, Sunak has used a wider reshuffle to bring back the prime minister who campaigned to remain in the European Union in a referendum on membership he called in 2016. It's a risky strategy — while welcomed by centrist lawmakers, the party's right senses the end of their increased dominance, built during the wars over EU membership, with one fearing the appointment amounted to a "Brexit surrender". «He has appointed the man who led the 'remain' campaign and who has got huge problems over his association with Greensill,» said a Conservative lawmaker on the right of the party, referring to Cameron's lobbying work for a now-collapsed supply chain finance firm. «Is he spoiling for a fight with Conservatives?» The decision to fire Braverman removes from the cabinet one of the most prominent supporters of leaving the EU and means even more of Sunak's top ministers supported remaining in the bloc in 2016. Out of the 29 cabinet roles, at least 16 backed remaining in the EU, compared with 10 who supported leaving. Sunak backed Brexit.

Jake Paul vs Conor McGregor: Will YouTuber-turned-boxer fight ex-UFC champion? Details here
Jake Paul and UFC superstar Conor McGregor are often engaged in the verbal spat. However, Paul has a knack for fighting with UFC fighting stars and McGregor is certainly in his desired list. In mid-December, Paul is set to make a return to the boxing ring, facing Andre August, a relatively lesser-known professional boxer boasting a 10-1-1 record. With an anticipated victory, discussions have intensified about Paul's potential next moves. Audie Attar, Conor McGregor's manager, has left the door open for a future showdown between former UFC champion and Paul, and it might not necessarily be confined to the boxing ring. When questioned about McGregor's future in combat sports and the possibility of a match against Paul, Attar indicated that while Paul has inked a deal with the PFL for his MMA debut, McGregor's current contractual obligations with the UFC pose a hindrance. Moreover, 35-year-old McGregor hasn't ventured into a boxing ring since his exhibition loss to Floyd Mayweather in late 2017. With Paul exploring various combat sports avenues and McGregor's contractual ties, the potential matchup remains uncertain but undeniably intriguing. McGregor has recently stepped into controversies after an investigation of allegations that surfaced during the NBA Finals last June in Miami. The probe examined claims by a woman that McGregor assaulted her in an arena bathroom after Game 4 of the NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and the Denver Nuggets.

Ex-PM Cameron makes shock return to UK government; Here's all you need to know
David Cameron sensationally returned to the British government as foreign secretary on Monday, as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak shook up his top team with a general election looming next year. Cameron's comeback from the political wilderness came as Sunak sacked right-wing firebrand Suella Braverman as interior minister to assert his authority over the Conservative party, which trail the Labour opposition in polls. James Cleverly moved from the foreign ministry to succeed Braverman after critics accused her of heightening tensions during weeks of contentious pro-Palestinian demonstrations and counter-protests. Cameron quit as prime minister in 2016 after losing the Brexit referendum, standing down as an MP that year, before later becoming mired in a lobbying scandal that was seen as tarnishing his reputation. The former leader, whose foreign policy record as prime minister is viewed as chequered at best, said he «gladly accepted» his new role as Britain faced «a daunting set of international challenges». «While I have been out of front-line politics for the last seven years, I hope that my experience — as Conservative leader for 11 years and prime minister for six — will assist me in helping the prime minister to meet these vital challenges,» Cameron added, citing the Israel-Hamas war and Russia's conflict in Ukraine. Cameron will be made a life peer in the House of Lords — Britain's unelected upper chamber of parliament — Downing Street announced, making him eligible to sit in government. The last lord as foreign secretary was Peter Carrington, who quit Margaret Thatcher's government after Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands in 1982. Cameron was instrumental in leading western countries' intervention in Libya in

Israel war news: Is Gaza ceasefire on cards? Israeli PM Netanyahu hints at possible hostage deal with Hamas
AFP. Asked whether there is a potential deal to free more of the hostages being held by Hamas militants, Netanyahu replied: "There could be." However, he did not elaborate on any potential strategy that may be implemented to release all or part of the 239 captives that Israel claims are being kept. "I think the less I say about it, the more I'll increase the chances that it materializes," he added. Meanwhile, Netanyahu has flatly rejected calls for a ceasefire in Gaza without the release of the hostages.

Benjamin Netanyahu tells NBC 'there could be' potential deal to free hostages
Benjamin Netanyahu told US media Sunday a deal could be afoot to free hostages being held in the Gaza Strip, but declined to provide details for fear of scuttling the potential plan. «We heard that there was an impending deal of this kind or of that kind and then we learned that it was all hokum. But the minute we started the ground operation, that began to change,» Netanyahu told NBC show «Meet the Press.» Asked whether there is a potential deal to free more of the hostages being held by Hamas militants, Netanyahu replied: «There could be.» But the leader stopped short of providing specifics about any plan that might be coming together to free some or all of the 239 hostages that Israel says are being held captive. «I think the less I say about it, the more I'll increase the chances that it materializes,» he said. A source close to Hamas said this week that negotiations have occurred over a possible three-day ceasefire in exchange for the release of a dozen hostages, including six Americans, held by the Islamists, but Netanyahu has flatly rejected calls for a ceasefire in Gaza without the release of the hostages. In a series of appearances on US Sunday talk shows, the prime minister sought to make clear Israel was doing everything it can, «around the clock,» in order to rescue those held captive. «This is one of our two war goals,» he said: «One is to destroy Hamas, and the second is to bring back our hostages.» Asked on CNN whether he agrees with the US position that an extended pause in Gaza fighting is needed in order to get the hostages released safely, Netanyahu said: «We don't disagree with that.

Heavy fighting rages near main Gaza hospital as Netanyahu dismisses calls for a cease-fire
Gaza City overnight and into Sunday as ground forces battled Hamas militants near the territory's largest hospital, where health officials say thousands of medics, patients and displaced people are trapped with no electricity and dwindling supplies. In a televised address on Saturday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected growing international calls for a cease-fire unless it includes the release of all the nearly 240 hostages captured by Hamas in the Oct. 7 rampage that triggered the war, saying Israel was bringing its «full force» to the battle. Israel has vowed to end Hamas' 16-year rule in Gaza and crush its military capabilities, while blaming the militants for the war's heavy toll on the 2.3 million Palestinians trapped in the besieged territory. Israel has come under mounting international pressure, even from its closest ally, the United States, as the war enters a sixth week.

What is a smog tower and do they work? How India is fighting air pollution
When temperatures drop and wind speed declines, toxic particles from car tailpipes, industrial chimneys, and construction sites remain trapped over India’s capital and its satellite cities. This is also the season when farmers in neighboring states harvest summer crops and burn the residue, leaving Delhi in a thick white haze that lasts for days. This year, once again, the city’s authorities are rolling out emergency measures such as reducing road traffic, banning farm fires, and activating the city’s smog towers to improve air quality.

Heavy fighting spurs 'catastrophic' scene at Gaza hospital
The gun battles and intense bombardment around the Al-Shifa hospital came as Israel pressed deep into Gaza City in its offensive aimed at destroying the militant group Hamas in the territory it rules. «Shooting is never stopping, airstrikes are unabated as well as artillery shells,» said a witness who spoke on condition of anonymity. «There are dozens of bodies around the complex that nobody can reach.» Though tens of thousands of people have fled the fighting, many have taken shelter in northern Gaza's hospitals which have been repeatedly hit by explosive strikes and gunfire. «The hospital is besieged, with no option to bring in the corpses and injured people sprawled outside.

House Republicans look to pass two-step package to avoid partial government shutdown
«This two-step continuing resolution is a necessary bill to place House Republicans in the best position to fight for conservative victories,» Johnson said in a statement after speaking with GOP lawmakers in an afternoon conference call. «The bill will stop the absurd holiday-season omnibus tradition of massive, loaded up spending bills introduced right before the Christmas recess.» The bill excludes funding requested by President Joe Biden for Israel, Ukraine and the US border with Mexico.
