Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to the Madiga Dalit community of Telangana at an election rally in Secunderabad, promising to form a committee that will look into their long-standing demand for sub-categorisation within the Scheduled Caste. In a surprise move, Modi also invoked former BJP Chief Bangaru Laxman- who was a Madiga- who was disgraced and later convicted for accepting a bribe of Rs 1 Lakh for an alleged defence deal.
At the BJP rally on Saturday, Modi was effusive in his praise for Manda Krishna Madiga, leader of this community, and the latter got emotional a few times during the rally.
The prime minister charged Congress and BRS with ignoring the rights of Dalits and betraying them after making tall promises.
“I had the good fortune of working under Bangaru Laxman and to learn from him,” Modi said, adding that he could understand the issues of the Madiga community due to this association. He maintained that now he has got the good fortune of working with Krishna who hails from the same community.
Laxman was caught in a sting operation in 2001 where he was captured on camera accepting Rs 1 Lakh in cash from people who were posing as retired defence personnel making a defence deal.
BJP removed him from the post of party president and the issue ended his political career. He was convicted in 2013 and passed away in March 2014.
