Multiplex chains renegotiate rentals, capex terms as business dives
The cinema business model was fairly straighforward, before covid and streaming platforms upended it: multiplexes would lease a large space in a mall on rent, build theatres and screen movies. Elections and cricket extravaganza IPL have further complicated the movie business, prompting multiplexes to rethink their strategy. Multiplex chains that have seen their business hit new lows over the past few months, with big Hindi language releases having reduced to a trickle and few hits in Hollywood and other local languages such as Tamil or Telugu, are trying to convince mall developers to agree to a partnership model where they can co-invest in new theatres.

Kangana Ranaut quitting Bollywood? Actress says 'everything there is fake'
Kangana Ranaut, the acclaimed Bollywood actress, has made a significant declaration regarding her future in the film industry. During a recent interview, she revealed her intention to step away from Bollywood if she wins the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections from the Mandi constituency. In an interview with AajTak, Kangana Ranaut expressed her firm decision, stating, «Yes,» when asked if she would bid farewell to Bollywood after fulfilling her current commitments. She emphasized her desire for passionate engagement, saying, «Ideally, I would want to do just one job.» Ranaut highlighted the disparity between the film world and the reality she seeks in public service. She remarked in Hindi, “The film world is a lie, everything there is fake. They create a very different environment, it is a glossy world. Fake set, a fake bubble which is to reach to the audience – be it to invoke happiness or sadness. This is the reality and I have to live up to the expectations of the people. By the end of it, I should not feel that someone else could have done it better than me. There are a lot of expectations and I am new in public service, so I have a lot to learn and do. As I learn on the job, there is a lot at stake.” Addressing the potential disappointment her departure might bring, Kangana acknowledged that filmmakers have urged her to stay, recognizing her talent. She added, «I am a good actor and it's a compliment that I acknowledge.»

Jules and Jim, Wings of Desire, Metropolis, Notorious—bought between the ages of 21 and 26 at hole-in-the-wall shops in Mumbai and Chennai but most often in the dank underground of Delhi’s Palika Bazaar. There was an unvarying routine: you would ask for foreign films, be offered porn, explain that you meant the other kind of foreign film, bargain half-heartedly, and stumble into the sunlight clutching Renoirs and Kitanos that may or may not play when you got home. It had all the unreliability and exhilaration of a drug deal.

Who is Nancy Tyagi? This designer from UP spent 30 days to create her red-carpet gown for Cannes
Cannes Film Festival? Fashion influencer Nancy Tyagi turned heads in a beautiful frilly pink gown that made her look like a princess straight from a Disney animated movie! However, this is not the sole reason why her Cannes look has gone viral. The young fashion designer has become the first artiste attending the prestigious film festival to create her own red carpet look and attire from scratch! The delicate, pink dress, which reportedly is created from more than 1,000 metres of fabric, was a labour of love and took Tyagi over a month to create! Taking to Instagram, Tyagi wrote, “Stepping onto the red carpet at the 77th Cannes Film Festival as a debutant feels surreal. I poured my heart and soul into creating this pink gown, which took 30 days, 1000 meters of fabric, and weighs over 20kg. The journey has been intense, but every moment was worth it. I'm overwhelmed with joy and gratitude for the love and support from all of you. This is a dream come true, and I hope my creation dazzles you as much as your support has inspired me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!”
