Unsustainable fishing practices endangering Hilsa population in Ganga estuary
hilsa ecosystem in the Ganga estuary. The use of fine mesh nets, which trap even the smallest fish, is described by many as an act of temporal greed. This unsustainable practice is pushing the hilsa population to spawn in Bangladesh, where catching juvenile hilsa is a punishable offense. While larger hilsa weighing between 400 g and 600 g are also caught, their numbers are significantly lower.

SoftBank chief rues selling Nvidia stake and missing out on $150 billion
TOKYO—SoftBank Group founder Masayoshi Son on Friday lamented what turned out to be a $150 billion blunder: selling shares in Nvidia years before the chip maker became one of the world’s most valuable companies. Son, known for some of the most successful investments in technology history, recalled one of his less-cherished moments on Friday at SoftBank Group’s annual shareholder meeting in Tokyo. “It’s frustrating to remember the ones that I missed," Son said.

As Dolphin numbers decline in Amazon, a man has vowed to keep them protected
Amazon river dolphin, also termed as the 'pink dolphins' owing to their shade of body color. Earlier in 2018, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, declared them as an endangered species, who were on the verge of extinction if necessary steps were not taken to protect them. Another type of dolphins that are found in the Amazon river includes the smaller tucuxi, that was also deemed as endangered two years after the same declaration around the pink dolphins, says a CNN report. Both of these dolphin species are of the predator kind and help in keeping the fish population and the marine ecosystem along the Amazon River in check. However, their rapid decline across the years has raised serious concerns around the marine ecosystem in this particular region.

Does the future of South Asian cuisine lie in the Middle East
Sri Lankan community in New York City probably gravitated to Staten Island, just below Manhattan because of cheaper rents, but there might be other reasons why the place feels familiar. One of the best ways to get a good meal in New York is to board the Staten Island ferry. It’s free, you pass the Statue of Liberty and at the other end are a bunch of great Sri Lankan restaurants. You can savour their curries with their distinctive deeply roasted spices and the underlying umami note from the grated dried tuna called Maldi fish, enjoy the hoppers (appams) and rich coconut rice and finish with one of the best desserts ever, thick yoghurt with kithul (fishtail palm syrup). And you can wonder why Staten Island has more Sri Lankan restaurants than all of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third swearing-in saw heads of neighbouring South Asian countries appear as guests. It might have been more meaningful without the one obvious omission, but it still seemed a gesture towards something that has almost vanished — the idea of South Asia beyond just how the countries affect each other on a political level. There are links of history, geography, cultural exchange, personal histories, environmental connections and, yes, food that also count in the South Asian space.
