Pope Francis labels both U.S. presidential candidates as evil, urges American Catholics to vote for the lesser one
Pope Francis, in his Friday speech, urged Catholic voters to select the lesser evil between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump. After a 12-day tour of Southeast Asia and Oceania, Francis told reporters during a press conference held from his papal aircraft. Everyone must consider and act in this way out of conscience. Besides denouncing Harris' advocacy for abortion rights as an assassination, the pope chastised Trump by declaring that not welcoming migrants is a sin. However, he added that it's ugly not to vote, and one must vote. Should Harris be elected, she intends to make Roe v. Wade a permanent law, and Trump has pledged to carry out the largest mass deportation in American history of our country. The pope did not say which candidate, if any, he finds more appealing. Moulding a ‘modak’ over memories of Ganesha
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. When I asked my mother about her memories of modak, she narrated a story so vivid that I felt like I was there—in a chawl in the central Mumbai neighbourhood of Dadar, watching the ladies of her family expertly turning out thin dumplings stuffed with jaggery and coconut, gossiping and arguing as they did. These dramas seemed appropriate because Lord Ganesha, the pot-bellied, elephant-headed god dear to millions, was himself born amidst celestial theatrics.

US accuses Russian state media of 'covert influence activities', hits it with new sanctions
Russian state media and RT with new sanctions, accusing it of playing key role in carrying out 'covert influence activities' aimed at undermining American elections and democracies. The State Department said it is starting a diplomatic campaign to alert nations about the risks associated with RT activities and disclosed declassified US intelligence findings suggesting RT is completely integrated with Russia's intelligence operations worldwide. «We took these steps based on our conclusion that Rossiya Segodnya and these five subsidiaries are no longer merely firehoses of Russian Government propaganda and disinformation; they are engaged in covert influence activities aimed at undermining American elections and democracies, functioning like a de facto arm of Russia's intelligence apparatus,» the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said on Friday.

What is 'Mission Mausam' and why is it needed?
Mission Mausam" to improve weather understanding and forecasting through expanded observation networks, better modelling and advanced tools like AI and machine learning. The mission will explore «weather management» technologies and include creating a laboratory to artificially develop clouds, increasing the number of radars by over 150 per cent and adding new satellites, supercomputers and much more. Why is it needed? According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, tropical weather forecasting remains challenging due to the complexity of atmospheric processes and limitations in current observation and model resolution. Observational data is relatively sparse, both spatially and temporally, and the horizontal resolution of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models, currently at 12 kilometres, makes it difficult to accurately forecast small-scale weather events in India, it said.

U.S. Elections: Harris leads Trump by 5 points in the new poll; voters say she won the debate
Donald Trump 47% to 42%. This advantage has grown after a debate between the two candidates that voters largely believed she won, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll that ended on Thursday. In the two-day survey, Harris's lead among registered voters was five percentage points, which was marginally higher than the four points she had over Trump in a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted from August 21–28. 53% of voters who said they had heard at least something about Tuesday's debate claimed Harris had won, 24% claimed Trump had, and the remaining voters either had not heard anything at all or had not responded. About 52% of those who watched the debate said that Trump faltered and didn't look intelligent, whereas 21% said the same about Harris. Five percent of Republican voters thought Trump lacked intelligence. In a fierce presidential debate, Harris repeatedly attacked Trump's suitability for office and his numerous legal issues, bringing up his felony conviction for allegedly falsifying business records. This put Trump on the defensive. Harris gave the impression of having higher moral integrity, according to 52% of voters who were familiar with the debate, compared to 29% who said the same of Trump. Why G7? Jaishankar asks when questioned about the need for BRICS
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday dismissed the argument that there was no need for «another club» called the BRICS, and said he was struck by the «insecurity» in the developed world over the grouping. During a conversation with Ambassador Jean-David Levitte at Global Centre for Security Policy, a think tank, here, Jaishankar said if the G7 can exist when there is the G20, there is no reason why BRICS cannot. Accounting for 27 per cent of global GDP, BRICS was founded by Brazil, Russia, India and China; later South Africa joined it, and in January 2024, five new countries — Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE and Ethiopia --joined the bloc. «Why the club? Because there was another club! It was called the G7 and you will not let anybody else into that club. So, we go and form our own club,» Jaishankar told to a loud cheer from the audience.
