Panama Canal eases limits that caused global shipping bottleneck
Panama Canal is lifting restrictions that caused a global shipping bottleneck as water levels normalize after a severe drought. The Panama Canal Authority increased the draft in the waterway to a maximum 50 feet and will allow 36 vessels a day to transit after recent rains lifted water levels at an artificial lake that forms part of the canal system, administrator Ricaurte Vasquez told reporters Monday. The agency expects rains to continue through November, further lifting water levels, he said. The canal handles about 3% of global maritime trade volumes under normal circumstances, and 46% of containers moving from Northeast Asia to the US East Coast. The channel is Panama’s biggest source of revenue, bringing in nearly $5 billion last year.

Tata's 130-year-old foreign education fund gets a relief as I-T tribunal reinstates its tax-exemption status
JN Tata Endowment (JNTE) for higher education abroad will continue to enjoy income-tax exemption, despite offering loan-scholarships for Indian students to study overseas, reported TOI. Founded in 1892 by Tata Group founder Jamsetji Tata, JNTE annually selects 90 to 100 students for merit-based loan scholarships. The scholarships span various disciplines, including applied sciences, management, and the arts, allowing students to pursue their studies outside India. As per JNTE’s official policy, scholars sign a seven-year agreement with the foundation, repaying the loan in five equal instalments between the third and seventh year. JNTE currently manages a corpus of Rs 200 crore.

NC fields Omar from Ganderbal & PDP Iltija Mufti from Bijbehara
NC) on Tuesday released a second list of candidates for the upcoming assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir, which included the name of former chief minister Omar Abdullah as its candidate from Ganderbal constituency in central Kashmir. After his release from a year-long detention in 2020, following abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, Abdullah had claimed that he won't contest elections unless statehood was restored to J&K. However, when the assembly election was announced recently, his father Farooq Abdullah and other party members started stressing on the importance of Omar contesting the polls. Abdullah, too, in his recent press interactions, said that «not fighting the elections could be a mistake». He was also quoted as saying, «It won't be right to seek votes when I won't be contesting the elections.»

Kavitha gets bail in Delhi excise case
Supreme Court Tuesday granted bail to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha, an accused in the alleged irregularities linked to the Delhi government's now-scrapped excise policy. «Investigation is complete and chargesheet has been filed. Custody of Kavitha is not necessary,» a division bench headed by Justice BR Gavai said. «The likelihood of trial being concluded in the near future is impossible. As said in various pronouncements of this court, undertrial custody should not turn into a punishment,» it ruled. The bench took exception to the Delhi High Court's observation that an educated, sophisticated woman is not entitled to bail under the beneficiary provision for women under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The high court had made the observation while turning down the bail plea of Kavitha, an ex-MP and daughter of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao. The high court in July held that she was not a vulnerable person.

New Champions League format promises more of almost everything storied clubs wanted from UEFA
new Champions League format this season will see more teams playing more games for more prize money. On Thursday, the Union of European Football Associations makes the draw in Monaco for the match schedule of the new single-standings league phase that replaces the traditional group stage. The first new Champions League format since 2003 promises more of almost everything that Europe's wealthiest and most influential clubs wanted from UEFA. There are four more places in a 36-team lineup; at least eight games each instead of six; Champions League games scheduled in January for the first time; a prize money rise of at least 25% to a minimum of 2.5 billion euros (USD 2.8 billion). There also was more evidence, at UEFA's European Championship this summer, that constant expansion of international competitions is leaving players tired and unable to perform at their best year-round. The new league phase in European club soccer's marquee event will have 144 total games compared to 96 in the group stage last season.

Unified Pension Scheme: a suitable compromise for pensioners?
Mint looks at the pros and cons of all three: It is a new hybrid pension scheme for government employees that, like OPS, guarantees an assured monthly pension of 50% of their last drawn salary before superannuation while retaining the contributory element of the NPS. The employee contributes 10% of their salary while the government puts in 18.5%. It factors in inflation through dearness allowance hikes.

When it comes to SIP, look at the gross inflows, not net, says AMFI's Venkat Nageswar Chalasani
Venkat Nageswar Chalasani, Chief Executive, AMFI, says 9.34 crore is the total number of accounts and Rs 24,000 crore is the total amount that has been raised in this particular month. If you derive that number, 24,000 divided by 9.33, it will be around Rs 2,500. So, it is just a mix. Some people are investing around Rs 1,00,000 and some people would be putting around Rs 500 to Rs 600 per month. The average, as I said, is derived and works out to around Rs 2,500. But this number is also growing. One year back, it was around Rs 2,200, today it is Rs 2,500. My sincere compliments for all the great work which the Association of Mutual Funds of India (AMFI) is doing. Venkat Nageswar Chalasani: Thank you very much. Retail investors are coming into the mutual fund fold. In fact, on the SIP front, there are around 9.33 crore accounts as we speak now. The AUM under SIP is around Rs 13 lakh crore, around 20% of my total AUM.
