Delhi High Court's Justice Subramonium Prasad on Wednesday recused himself from hearing the plea filed by alleged conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar, seeking additional meetings in jail with his lawyers. The recusal was due to the multiple legal cases against Chandrasekhar, which could potentially present a conflict of interest or require a different judicial perspective. Sukesh Chandrashekhar through a plea requested permission to increase his meetings with his legal counsel to five times a week. This request sought an additional three meetings beyond the two meetings per week currently allowed. To support his request, Chandrashekar referred to the Arvind Kejriwal case where he was granted five weekly meetings with his council.

Shivakumar on Wednesday said the government will look into complaints against those who pay Goods and Services Tax and income tax but still avail benefits under the 'guarantee schemes' launched by the Congress government. He also asserted that there was no question of altering or scrapping the guarantee schemes. «As the Congress state president, I am saying that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that there is no question of altering or scrapping the guarantee schemes for any reason,» Shivakumar told reporters. «There are complaints that some people who have more income are availing this benefit. We will review that. That's it. There are complaints that those who are paying income tax and GST are availing it,» he maintained.

finance ministry has exempted the income of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) from payment of income tax for five years till fiscal 2027-28. Accordingly, grants/subsidies received from the central government; fees/ subscriptions, including RTI fee, tender fee, sale of scrap, PVC card; authentication, enrolment and updation service charges received; term/fixed deposits; and interest on bank deposits earned by UIDAI would be exempt from income tax. A notification to this effect was issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) under the Ministry of Finance. «This notification shall be applicable for assessment year 2024-2025, 2025-2026, 2026-2027, 2027-2028 and 2028-2029,» it added.

Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority (IEPFA) will hold outreach programmes in five key cities, introduce a new five-digit code for calls and tweak rules to expedite claim settlements, a senior official told ET. Other planned measures include a revamped interactive voice response system (IVRS) and a call centre. Securities, dividends and debentures that remain unclaimed for more than seven years are transferred by companies to the IEPFA under the corporate affairs ministry. The authority then oversees claim settlements, with the companies playing a key part in verification and other processes.
