Jammu & Kashmir polls to begin from southern Kashmir despite rise in terror
Jammu and Kashmir is set to hold its shortest three-phase assembly elections in September, and the Election Commission of India has decided to begin the elections in challenging areas of southern Kashmir and Chenab Valley across the Pir Panjal mountains, which have recently seen incidents of violence. The assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held after nearly a decade--the longest interval in modern history--and the first since the repeal of Articles 370 and 35 (A) and the completion of the delimitation exercise in 2022, during which both parliament and assembly elections were redrawn. The ECI has combined the districts from both Kashmir and Jammu divisions to ensure that each and every candidate receives the security demanded by the political parties. The first round of the assembly elections is set for September 18 in 23 constituencies in southern Kashmir, including Pulwama, Anantnag, Shopian, and Kulgam, as well as Ramban, Kishtwar, and Doda in Jammu's Chenab Valley. These locations have seen recent insurgent events, and counter-insurgency operations have been ongoing for some weeks. The police and army have established the presence of foreign militants in Doda, Kishtwar, Anantnag, and Kulgam.

Haryana polls: BJP banks on new leadership and core voters
Haryana after polls were announced for the state. The party relies on Nayab Saini as chief minister and core voters. To get support from the most backward, BJP replaced two-term CM Manohar Lal with Nayab Saini in March. «The change of leadership augurs well for the BJP. Saini has been accepted as a leader by all the communities. His approach towards governance and easy access has made him very popular and we are definitely going to benefit from this in the assembly elections,» Satish Poonia, BJP in-charge of Haryana, told ET. In 2019, with 40 seats, the BJP fell short of the majority level of 45 in the 90-member assembly and established a coalition government with the Jananayak Janata Party (JJP). Congress won 30 seats in 2019.

Tamil Nadu nurse becomes a hero in Wayanad with daring zip-line rescue
The rescue mission's unlikely hero was A. Sabeena, a 40-year-old nurse from Gudalur town in Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris district. For five consecutive days, Sabeena risked her life by zip-lining across the turbulent river, ultimately saving 35 lives. Her incredible bravery and selflessness earned her the prestigious Kalpana Chawla Award for daring and courageous enterprise during the Independence Day celebrations, along with a cash prize of ₹5 lakh. Sabeena received the call for help on the morning of July 30. Her colleagues at the NGO where she worked informed her that the Kerala government urgently needed nurses in Wayanad. Without hesitation, Sabeena packed her bags and embarked on a 70-kilometer journey to the disaster-stricken area, braving heavy rain, strong winds, and knee-deep mud. Despite having seen footage of the devastation, with bodies scattered and houses washed away, Sabeena remained undeterred, driven by her determination to assist those in need.

Sentiment sours on growth, turns to FMCG for a bounce
FMCG) and consumption-related shares, with global macroeconomic volatility in the shape of weak US economic data, a declining Yen, and rising geopolitical tensions dulling the allure of growth and momentum stocks. However, money managers and analysts see limited short-term upside for FMCG stocks due to high valuations but recommend existing investors hold them for the long term. «The current outperformance of FMCG stocks can be attributed to the strengthening rural economy and investors gravitating towards defensive stocks amid global uncertainties and high valuations in many other sectors,» said George Thomas, equity fund manager at Quantum AMC.

However, the Indian market managed to bounce back, which seems to be due to core economic strength. What are your views on this, especially considering the recent Hindenburg drama? Sahil Kapoor: Over the last two to three months, the rate of ascent in the market has been slowing down. The market is now spending more time reaching higher highs than it was earlier, indicating a shift in momentum towards consolidation.

Bombay HC rejects Amit Goenka's plea against Sebi's hiring of KPMG as forensic auditor for SGRL
Amit Goenka's petition challenging the Securities and Exchange Board of India's (Sebi) appointment of KPMG as a forensic auditor for Shirpur Gold Refinery Limited (SGRL) and its subsequent report on the firm. A division bench of Justice Rajesh Patil and AS Chandurkar stated that they are not inclined to entertain Goenka's plea due to an unjustifiable delay in challenging the Sebi communication dated September 13, 2021, and not challenging the subsequent interim order issued by the securities market regulator on April 25, 2023. On September 13, 2021, Sebi picked KPMG Assurance and Consulting Services as the forensic auditor for SGRL's financial accounts for the fiscal years 2018-2019 through 2020-2021.
